Activity 2: Must think!

This activity will help you understand how to deal with problem involving
simple fractions at home.
Example

Engage : Steven prepared dalandan juice for his daughter. He mixed

cup of dalandan juice and cup of water. How many cups of liquid did he
mix?

Explore: To solve the problem alone, we need to add and .

Number Sentence: + = _______________

To find the sum of and , consider the following models below.

Answer: Steven mixed cup of liquid

Problem:
Jose jogs regularly. He jogged 2/6 km then he rested for a while. He jogged
another 4/6 km. Then he stopped. How many kilometers had he jogged?

1. What does Jose do regularly?

2. Do you love to jog? Why?
3. What does jogging do to our body?
4. What is asked in the problem?
5. What are the given facts?
6. What operation is needed to solve the problem?

Solution : Solution: Find the LCD of the

given fractions.
The LCD of 6 and 8 is 24

Add the whole numbers and then

the fractions
Subtract the whole numbers and then
the fractions
Answer: Answer:
Key Ideas:
Similar Fractions are fractions with the same denominators.
To add or subtract similar fractions:
1. Add or subtract the numerators.
2. Write the sum or difference over the common
denominator.
3. Simplify or write the answer in lowest terms if necessary.

Dissimilar Fractions are fractions with different denominators

To add or subtract dissimilar fractions:
1. Determine the least common denominator (LCD), to rewrite it into
similar fraction.
2. Get the equivalent fractions using this denominator.
3. Add or subtract the numerators. Then write the sum or difference
over the common denominator
4. Simplify or write the answer in lowest terms if necessary.

Mixed Numbers/Mixed Fractions are fractions that have a whole

number part and a proper fraction part.

What’s More
Let us put your understanding to the test by answering the following
activities below.

A. Find the sum and difference for the following given fractions. Express
your answer in the lowest term if possible
1. _______________________________________

2. _______________________________________

3. _______________________________________

4. _______________________________________

5. _______________________________________
B. Find the sum or difference of the following fractional parts.

1. = ________________________________

+
2. - = ________________________________

3. + + = ________________________________

4. + - =________________________________

5. - + - = _____________________________

C. Problem Solving:
1. Lorna brought 1/5 meter of red ribbon. Rose brought 1/5 meter and
Danica 2/5 meter. How many meters long would the ribbon be, if
those girls put them all together.
2. During quarantine Mang Tonio cultivated 7/8 of his land for farming.
He had 3/8 planted to corn and the rest to palay. What part of the
cultivated farm was to palay?
