Measurement of Third Harmonic Resistive Current for Surge Arrester:

Third order Harmonics in the Leakage Current:

When voltage is applied to the arrester, due to non-linear voltage current characteristics of a metal
oxide used in arrester, harmonics in the leakage current is generated. The harmonics component depends on
resistive component of arrester. The resistive component depends on applied voltage and temperature. Thus
due to this resistive component major increase in third order harmonics component is observed. The
magnitude of third order harmonics in the leakage current can be used as indicator of resistive current.

Project : Maintenance Testing of Electrical Equipments

Testing Procedure:

1. Make the connections as per the diagram given below

2. The kit should be properly earthed.
3. Clamp On type CT should be placed above the surge monitor to pick up the total leakage current.
4. Carryout the measurements as per standard procedure supplied by the test kit manufacturer.
5. Note down the system voltage and ambient temperature along with test current value.
6. Avoid measurement during monsoon

Evaluation of Test Result s:

1. ZnO Surge Arrester continuously conducts a small leakage current. The resistive component of this
leakage current may increase with time due to different stresses causing ageing and finally cause
arrester

2. If Harmonics are present in the system voltage, it affects the value of measured third harmonic current.

Compensating device provided to be used to nullify the effect. The value of Third Harmonic Resistive
current shall be less than 30 µA.
3. The measured value of resistive current is converted to standard operating voltage of arrester. The
correction factor is calculated as per the ‘typical information for conversion to standard operating voltage
conditions’ given in IEC 60099-5.
