INTRODUCTION

Alternative building construction systems is another way, process and methods of

constructing and designing a building rather than conventional building construction system
which is generally or widely used. Alternative building methods involve Eco and Green
Developments which are designed to minimize energy requirements, it should encompass
environmental issues that deals with conservation of the site natural resources,
transportation or accessibility, high quality materials that has low environmental impact,
prioritizing health and well being of end-user, and affordability and adaptability of the
design.
There are several types alternative building construction systems that reduce cost of
materials and provide sustainability, such as, natural building techniques. These natural
building techniques are the earth building system which are used in ancient times, it
includes construction system such as (1) adobe brick buildings, (2) cob buildings, (3) rammed
earth buildings and (4) earth bag buildings. Earth ship system is also a natural building
technique and has six basic design principles which are collection of rainwater, energy
production with renewable sources such as solar and wind power, sewage treatment,
thermal/solar heating and cooling, food production,construction with natural and recycled
materials. Another type alternative building construction system is the PMC or Permanent
Modular Construction, it uses prefabricated elements that also decreases the time needed
for total construction and has core benefits in (1) scheduling, (2) job site Improvement, (3)
waste reduction, (4) Quality Control and (5) Sustainability that has green benefits such as
Improved IAQ or Indoor Air Quality, Compatible with LEED or Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design, Reusable, Tighter Envelope, and Renewable Energy. PMC buildings
are comparable to buildings strictly built onsite in terms of quality, life span, and materials
used for construction. Pre-cast concrete and Prefab wall systems is also an example of
alternative building construction system, it has an ability to save time and labor because it
does not require skilled and experienced workers.

Structural Insulated Panel system is an alternative building construction system that has
similarity in prefab wall systems because it is a pre-built material that is a foam in the center
sandwiched between two oriented standard boards (OSBs) and save times, money and labor
when building with it. There are more types of alternative building construction systems that
are globally and locally available that has more efficiency and benefit in designing and
constructing a building.Nowadays, conventional construction system brings more carbon
footprint or negative impacts on the environment. Alternative building construction systems
resolves environmental issues because of its capabilities and characteristics, it is a way of
design and construction advancement that minimizes the harmful effects in environment
and achieves sustainability. This system could be a potential solution to the environmental
problems in the world.
