BRADEN CH185A HOISTS - PART NUMBERS 04595 & 04505

BRAKE VALVE AND CLUTCH TEST PROCEDURE
It appears that debris, possibly from the hydraulic system, can cause a relief valve, within the Gresen brake valve, to
malfunction. With the brake valve malfunctioning, there is a possibility of shock loading the over-running brake clutch
in the hoist, causing it to eventually fail. The attached test should be conducted as soon as possible, to determine if
the valve and brake clutch are working properly. If the hoist does not pass the test, it should be removed from serv-
ice until the valve and/or clutch is repaired or replaced.

CAUTION
Hot oil may cause injury. Make certain the oil has cooled to a safe temperature
(less than 110°F/43°C) before working on the hydraulic system.

Connect an appropriate pressure gauge to monitor the system relief valve for the hoisting circuit.

1. To test if the relief valve in the brake valve is working correctly, set up the crane with out-riggers extended and lift
the maximum load available, with minimum number reeving, while staying within the crane load chart limits or spec-
ifications. If the crane is unable to lift the test load and the system pressure is less than 3,000 psi, this may indi-
cate a malfunction in the brake valve. If the test indicates the brake valve is malfunctioning, the machine must
be taken out of service until repairs can be made.

Even with a successful test, it is Braden’s recommendation to ALWAYS lower a load in the same speed range that
was used to lift the load. NEVER attempt to lower a load in high speed, if that load was raised in low speed. This
may cause excessive pressure in the brake valve and hydraulic motor.

2. The second part of the test checks the load holding ability of the internal static brake and over-running brake clutch.
This test is to be conducted with no load on the hook and with pressure relieved from the main hydraulic tank.
Disconnect the brake release line (item 1) shown in the illustration below and cap the tee fitting (at item 2) with a
–12 ORFS cap. With an empty hook and the engine at mid throttle, move the winch control lever of the winch to
be tested, into the lowering position. If the drum will not turn in the lowering direction with the control lever in it’s
maximum lowering position, the over-running clutch is functioning properly. Very slowly return the control lever to
the center “hold” position, then move the lever to the hoisting position to turn the drum and brake to a new position,
then repeat the test again. If the drum turns during the lowering test, the over-running clutch may be defec-
tive and the crane must be taken out of service until repairs can be made.

NOTE:
The hydraulic system on
the crane should be serv-
iced at regular intervals
as recommended by the
equipment manufacturer
and should include filter
and fluid changes. A reg-
ular program of preven-
tive maintenance is
strongly recommended to
minimize the need for
emergency servicing and
promote safe, reliable
equipment operation. PACR WINCH DIVISION
