PRE-LAB 5 EXERCISE:

3. When placed in a pycnometer, 20 g of salt displaces 7.6 g of kerosene. If the mass

density of kerosene is 0.83 g/cm3, find the volume and density of salt.

4. In a car lift used in a service station, compressed air exerts a force on a small
piston that has a circular cross section of radius 5.00 cm. This pressure is
transmitted by a liquid to a piston that has a radius of 15.0 cm.
a. What force must the compressed air exert to lift a car weighing 13 300 N?
b. What air pressure produces this force?
5. Water and then oil (which don’t mix) are poured into a tube, open at both ends.
They come to equilibrium as shown. What is the density of the oil?

6. Water enters a house through a pipe with an inside diameter of 2.0 cm at an

absolute pressure of 4.0 x 105 Pa (about 4 atm). A 1.0-cm-diameter pipe leads
to the second-floor bathroom 5.0 m above. When the flow speed at the inlet pipe
is 1.5 m/s, find the flow speed, pressure, and volume flow rate in the bathroom.
ANSWERS:

1. The buoyant force that acts on an object submerged in water is due to

B. greater water pressure on the bottom than on the top.

2. Use g = 10 m/s2. If an object submerged in water displaces 20 kg of

water, then the buoyant force that acts on the object is

Given:
g = 10 m/s2 mass of water = 20kg

Solution:
Buoyant Force, F= mg
F= (20kg) (10m/s2)
F = 200 N
Therefore, the answer is C. 200 N.

3. When placed in a pycnometer, 20 g of salt displaces 7.6 g of kerosene.

If the mass density of kerosene is 0.83 g/cm3, find the volume and
density of salt.

Given:
Mass of salt = 20 g
Mass of kerosene = 7.6 g
Mass density of kerosene = 0.83 g/cm3

Find:
Volume of salt =?
Density of salt =?

Solution:
m = pv
v = m/p

volume of kerosene = 7.6 g / 0.83 g/cm3

v = 9.15 cm3

volume of salt:
v = mass / density of kerosene
v = 20 / 0.83
v = 24.1 cm3
density of salt:
p = mv
p = 20 / 24.1
p = 0.83 g/cm3

4. In a car lift used in a service station, compressed air exerts a force on a

small piston that has a circular cross section of radius 5.00 cm. This
pressure is transmitted by a liquid to a piston that has a radius of 15.0
cm.

a. What force must the compressed air exert to lift a car weighing 13
300 N?

Given:
Cross section of radius =5.00 cm
Pressure = 15.0 cm

Find:
Force =?

Solution:
p = F/A
F = pA
F = (15.0cm) (5.00cm)
F = 75 N

b. What air pressure produces this force?

Given:
F = 75 N
𝜋 = 3.142
r2 = 0.05

Find:
Pressure =?
Solution:
P = F/ 𝜋𝑟 2
75 𝑁
𝑝=
(3.142)(0.05)
𝑷 =𝟒𝟕𝟕.𝟒𝟎 𝑷𝒂

5. Water and then oil (which don’t mix) are poured into a tube, open at
both ends. They come to equilibrium as shown. What is the density of
the oil?

Given:
mass of oil = 0.000272 kg
volume = 8.62 cm
Find:
Density =?

Solution:
p = m/v
p = 0.000272 / 8.62
p = 3.15545244 × 10−5

6. Water enters a house through a pipe with an inside diameter of 2.0 cm

at an absolute pressure of 4.0 x 105 Pa (about 4-atm). A 1.0-cm-
diameter pipe leads to the second-floor bathroom 5.0 m above. When
the flow speed at the inlet pipe is 1.5 m/s, find the flow speed, pressure,
and volume flow rate in the bathroom.

Given:
Inside diameter = 2.0 cm
Absolute pressure 1 = 4.0 x 10^5 Pa
Height = 5.0 m
Flow speed 1 = 1.5 m/s

Find:
Flow speed 2 =?
Pressure 2=?
Flow rate=?
Solution:
