Enrichment Activity

1. Describe the characteristics of a motor control.

Ans. There are four characteristics of human actions which any theory of motor control must be able to
account for: flexibility, uniqueness, consistency, modifiability. Reflex - The reflex was considered to be
the fundamental unit of motor control driving all voluntary movement.
2. How do motor control being useful.

Ans. Depending on the applications of a motor, controllers may offer different features. They help the
motor start in low-voltage conditions, allow multiple-speed or reverse control operations, protect from
over current and overload faults, and perform a wide range of other functions.

3. What are the different motor symbol.

Electric Motor Symbol;

Here, you can see the generic symbol of motor that is used in most of the circuit diagrams, wiring
diagrams, etc.

AC Motor Symbol
AC motors are those which operate with alternating power supply or AC. These types of motors depend
upon the voltage and frequency of the power supply. Here, you can see the symbol of AC Motor.

DC Motor Symbol

DC Motors are those which operate with direct current or DC power supply. These motors depend upon
the voltage of the power supply, there is no frequency concept. Here, you can see the symbol of DC
Motor.

Linear Motor Symbol

Here, you can see the symbol of linear motor.

Symbol of Stepper Motor

Here, you can see the stepper motor symbol. Stepper motor provides very precise control and rotation.
They can operate with digital electronic signals. Stepper motors are mainly used for robotic applications,
actuators, etc.

Single Phase Motor Symbol

Single-phase motors are those which work with 110V, 220V, or 240V single-phase AC supply. Single-
phase motors are not self-starting, so they have two windings. That is why, here you can see in the
symbol of single-phase motor, four terminals are there for two windings.

Three(3) Phase Motor symbol

Here, you can see the symbol of three-phase motor. It having three terminals R, Y, B
Induction Motor Symbol

Here, you can see the symbol of Induction Motor

4. Why is it, motor control is part of our daily chores.

Ans. popular form of exercise that aims to restore co‐ordinated and efficient use of the muscles that
control and support the spine. Patients are initially guided by a therapist to practise normal use of the
muscles during simple tasks.

Evaluation

1. Toggle switch - Toggle switches are among the most basic and most common of all electronic
components, the switch moves contacts that either provide a path for current to flow through or moves
those contacts in such a way that the path is cut. The toggle switches most people will be familiar with
are light switches.
2. Motor and control equipment - Motor controls can ideally be identified as a group of devices that
govern the performance of an electric motor in a predefined manner. Motor controls are also known as
motor controllers. They have several essential functions which include: automatically or manually
starting as well as stopping the operation of an electric motor, setting forward or reversing the course of
rotation, selecting and regulating the speed of rotation, controlling or regulating the torque, as well as
protecting the motor against several degrees of electrical overloads and faults.

3. Power source - A power source is a source of power. Most commonly the type of power referred to is:
Power (physics), the rate of doing work; equivalent to an amount of energy consumed per unit time.

4. Motor type - We know there are generally two types of motors, AC motor, and DC motor. AC motors
are flexible for speed control and demand low power during start. On the other hand, DC motors are
widely used due to its initial cost of low power units is less compared to AC and can be easily installed.

5. Wye connection - Wye (Y) connection, also known as “Y” connection, is a three-phase circuit in which
all the three loads are connected at a single neutral point. Unlike delta connection, wye-connected
systems carry a fourth neutral conductor, often grounded but sometimes left floating (ungrounded wye
system).

6. Delta connection - a mesh connection for connecting electrical apparatus to a three-phase circuit, the
three corners of the delta as represented being connected to the three wires of the supply circuit —
compare open-delta connection, star connection, t connection.
