1. Definition
Giving instruction is an expression that is used in order to issue a command or instruction and
prohibition.
2. Social Function
The purpose of expression of giving instruction is to tell someone to do something or to forbid
someone to do something.

We can use “please” at the beginning or end of the sentence to make the instruction more polite.
Example :
 Please, turn on the tv!
 Don’t smoke here, please!
 Be careful, please!
 Please, don’t be naughty!

Mother : Okay, don’t forget to bring the umbrella. It’s going to rain soon. Anna
: Sure, mom
Mother : Be careful, honey
Anna : Yes, of course mom. See you later!

Lisa : Gina, do your homework now!


Gina : I’ll do it later. I’m watching youtube now Lisa : You can watch it later. Don’t be
lazy! Gina : All right, I will do it.
