METHOD STATEMENT

TITLE:

CHEMICAL CLEANING AND TREATMENT OF CHILLED WATER SYSTEM

1.0 Purpose:
1.1 This procedure outlines the requirements and methods for cleaning and
treatment of chilled water system using chemicals.
2.0 Safety Precautions:

2.1 Obtain the approval of the work permit from the concerned Department
before starting any works.
2.2 Coordinate with concerned plant operators prior to commencement of the
work.
2.3 Tools and equipment should be made operational and available for use.
Required workers, materials and other needed resources should also be
readily available.
2.4 Concerned certified permit receiver, standby man and work-in- Charge
shall be at work site during the execution of the work.

2.5 Sufficient signboards/warning signs shall be provided.

2.6 Personnel not directly involved in the testing shall be excluded form the
area.
2.7 Handling of chemicals:
➢ Avoid contact with skin and eyes
➢ Avoid extremes of temperature
➢ Replace cap securely after use.

2.8 Protective equipment:

Wear protective over alls, rubber Glover and eye/face protection

3.0 Procedure:

3.1 General requirements

3.1.1. Verify completeness of installation of the system. 3.1.2. Verify if the

system has underwent and passed the hydrotesting.

3.1.3. Check all valves within the system and ensure that each are
positioned accordingly, except the valves which used to isolate
the system, which will remain closed.

3.1.4. Check all tools and equipment and ensure that it is made
operational and available for us.
3.1.5. Ensure that the quality of sweet water to be used shall be as per
requirement, (Water to be used shall be less than 500 PPM. Total
Dissolve Solids). Chemical Analysis report of water shall be provided to
Saudi Aramco for reference.

3.1.6. Ensure that all chemicals are readily available,

3.1.7. Filling of sweet water shall be carried out thru the filling point "A" as
shown in the attached drawing.

3.1.8. Chemical injection shall be carried out through the chemical pot
feeder as shown in the attached drawing.

3.1.9. All wastewater shall be disposed thru the existing storm drawing
system.
3.2 Cleaning:

3.2.1. Fill the chilled water system with sweet water from a water tanker.

3.2.2 Operate the chilled water system and air handling Units for 30
minutes to circulate the water.

3.2.3 Start gradual injection of chemical A849 (cleaning agent at the

initial dosage rate of 20 liter of chemical A849 per cubic meter of
water.

3.2.4. Circulate the chemical solution for 30 minutes after which sample shall
be taken from the lowest (drain) and highest (vent) points of the system
to ensure that the chemical solution has reached all points of the
system. PH value should be in the range of 3-4. Add more chemical if
PH has not reach 3-4 value.

3.2.5 Once the required PH value is attained, continue circulating the

chemical solution for a period of four (4) hours.

3.2.6 Upon completing of the 4 hour re-circulation of the solution, chillers

and AHU units shall be stopped and chemical solution shall be
completely drained thru all drain points and disposed as per item
3.1.9.
3.2.7 Re-fill the system with sweet water and circulate for 1 hour then drain.
Report as required until system is cleared of all cleaning chemical
residue.

3.2.8 Re-fill the system with sweet water thru and inject chemical A102
(neutralizing agent) gradually until PH reaches in the range of 7-8 value.
Once the required PH value is attained, the system is now ready for
maintenance chemical treatment.

3.3 Maintenance Treatment:

3.3.1 Inject chemical A-432 at the dosage rate of 3.5 liters per cubic meter of
water and circulate for one (1) hour. Alternatively, inject chemical A-435
/ A-420 (preventive maintenance chemical) at the dosage rate of 1.5
liters per cubic meter of water. Circulate for one (1) hour.

3.3.2 Inject biocide chemical A-515 (to prevent bacteria contamination) at a

dosage rate of 0.5 liter per cubic meter of water. Circulate for one (1)
hour.

3.3.3 Collect samples from the highest (vent) and lowest (drain) points of the
system and carry out chemical and bacteriological tests at water
projects laboratory to ensure that the control parameters are within the
standard limits
Documentation:-
3.3.4 Upon completion of the tests, all necessary reports shall be
generated and submitted to concerned department.
3.3.5 The following parameters are recommended to keep the system free from
scale & corrosion:

• For chemicals (A-435 / A-420) :

PARAMETERS CONTROL LIMITS

TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLID MG/L MAX 3500
