RIZAL’S LAST HOURS

After the trial, Rizal was kept in a cell at fort Santiago. He spent his last hours in his lonely room. He was
heavenly guarded. The Jesuits, including his former professor at the Ateneo, comforted him. He penned
his last letters to his family and professor blumentritt. He wrote his Poem. This poem had no title. It
came to be called the Last Farewell.

At 4:00 pm, December 29, Rizal was visited by his mother. he knelt and kissed her hands, begging her to
forgive him. When Dona Teodora left, Trinidad entered the room. Rizal gave her an alcohol cooking
stove whispering to her in English: “ there is something in it.” Trinidad understood because Rizal had
taught her English. Thus Rizal was able to smuggle his Last poem through the prison guards.

Early in the morning of december30, rizal received his last communion. He heard his last Mass with
father Vincent Balaguer officiating. This priest also married him and Josephine, in accordance with
catholic rites. Rizal gave religious book, imitation of Christ by Thomas a kampis to Josephine as a
wedding gift.

The Christmas of 1896 was Rizal's last Christmas on earth. It was his saddest Christmas. He knew he
would die. His enemies were demanding his blood.
The trial of Rizal was held in Manila on December 26, 1896. He was tried by a Spanish military court,
presided over by Lt. Col. Jose Togores Arjona. He was accused of rebellion and or

About 6:30 A.M.,after saying goodbye to Josephine,Rizal began his death march from Fort Santiago to
Bagumbayan (Lu-neta).Manila.He was guarded by soldiers with drawn bayonets. Father Estanislao
March(Jesuit priest) and Lt. Taviel de Andra-de(his defense attorney) walked by his side.Thousands of
people (Filipinos and foreigners) were present to watch the tragic event.

ose Rizal’s execution was carried out when the command “Fuego” was heard and Rizal made an effort to
face the firing squad but his bullet riddled body turned to the right and his face directed to the morning
sun. Rizal exactly died at 7:03 AM and his last words before he died were those said by Jesus Christ:
“consummatum est,” which means, “It is finished.”

Jose Rizal was secretly buried in Paco Cemetery in Manila but no identification was placed in his grave.
His sister Narcisa tried to look in every grave site and found freshly turned soil at the Paco cemetery,
assuming the burial site as the area where Rizal was buried. She gave a gift to the site caretaker so as to
mark the grave with RPJ — the initials of Rizal in reverse.
