SPECIAL PRECIPITATED GREEN SILICAS

COMPANY PRESENTATION
2019/11
THE INVESTMENT GROUP
The MPC Group is a global group active in the management of assets and
investments, industrial services, navigation, shipbuilding and trading. The MPC Group
has approximately 1,300 employees.

With its very diverse range of services, MPC Münchmeyer Petersen is one of the few
major internationally operating Hamburg, Germany based service and trading
companies that are successfully leading the centuries-old tradition of Hanseatic
Traders into the future.

MPC BIOENERGIA
BIOENERGY PROJECT DEVELOPER

MPC Bioenergia, a subsidiary of the MPC Group in

Brazil, develops bioenergy projects from biomass.

MPC Bioenergia gained experience in the planning,

construction and operation of a thermoelectric power
plant burning rice husks in South of Brazil.

ORYZASIL was founded for the development of a

thermoelectric power plant, where the ashes of the
rice husks are converted into silica and energy is
generated.

SPECIAL PRECIPITATED GREEN SILICAS

THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME ORYZASIL
THE BOTANICAL NAME, LATIN

As ORYZASIL uses rice husks as a renewable source

for the silica production, it was decided to express this
already in the company name:
Rice is the third largest cereal culture in the world, only
surpassed by corn and wheat. More than half of the
world population feeds on rice.
ORYZA = Refers to Oryza sativa, the botanical name
of rice
SIL = The suffix "SIL" originates from the product
generated by the plant, silica.

PRODUCTION OF GREEN SILICA
THE STEP BY STEP PROCESS

ORYZASIL is producing functionalized, nanostructured, high performance silica

(SiO2) from rice husk ash.
In contrary to many competitors, ORYZASIL is able to produce green silica by using
raw material from a renewable source and process temperatures below 500 degrees
Celsius.

RICE IN NUMBERS
THE STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL IS THE LARGEST RICE PRODUCER IN BRAZIL

 Rio Grande do Sul is a state in the

southernmost part of Brazil
 70% of the national rice production is done in
the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
 In 2016/17, 8,746,825 tons of rice were
harvested in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

RICE HUSKS
RENEWABLE RESOURCE

In the processing of rice, the rice industry

deals with the husk, the bran and the rice.
Rice and bran are used for food purposes
however the husks still lack ecologically
appropriate disposal.

The volume of rice husk generated

represents 22% of the total harvested
grains.

PREVENTING METHANE GAS EMISSIONS
NEGATIVE IMPACTS IF RICE HUSKS ARE DEPOSITED ON DUMPSITES

METHANE GAS EMISSIONS

When dumping rice husks at land
deposits methane gas is emitted in the
decomposition process.

SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION
The high temperatures caused by the
decomposition process can ignite the
risk husk. The ash is often carried by
the windy conditions in the neighboring
environments.
LEACHATE LIQUID Rice husk deposit
Together with the impact of rainwater,
this process is responsible for the
leaching of organic compounds into the
environment. This leachate makes the
soil inhospitable.

COMPARISON
GREEN SILICA PRODUCTION VS. CONVENTIONAL PRODUCTION PROCESS

GREEN SILICA PROCESS VS CONVENTIONAL PROCESS

 1. Rice extracts SiO2 from the soil via phytomining 1. Sand is mixed with sodium carbonate (NaCO3)
Sand is a limited raw material !
!
 2. Rice husks are burned to obtain ash (RHA) 2. The mixture is melted at 1,200-1,400 °C
Energy intensive process ! !
 3. The RHA is mixed with caustic soda (NaOH) and
heated to temperatures below 500 °C
3. Vitreous sodium silicate (Na2SiO2) is dissolved
xxxxxxx
4. The mixture is filtered to obtain the sodium silicate 4. Dilution of sodium silicate (water glass)
(water glass)

5. Precipitation process, the reaction of sodium silicate with sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
6. Separating the SiO2 and saline (Na2SO4 + H2O) by filter press

 7. Drying of saline solution with an evaporator and selling

the product (Na2SO4) to the detergent market
7. Discarding the saline in rivers or oceans
Large fresh water consumption ! !
8. Drying the amorphous precipitated silica (SiO2)
9. Packaging
