Communication situation-:

I had applied for an internship during the covid period and I was shortlisted for an interview
but since it was the covid period they decided to terminate the internship program. It was
my last year in college and I needed to do an internship for the final project to get the
degree so this internship was very important for me and I had to somehow convince the
interviewer to accept me as an intern.

“Role” in the situation-:


My role was that I was a candidate who had to try and persuade the interviewer that I am
suitable for the position of the market research intern at IDFC mutual funds.

What and why do you want to communicate in that situation-:


What - The main goal of mine in this communication situation is to persuade and convince
the interviewer to accept me as an intern in their company.
Why – This internship was very important for me for my graduation and since they had
terminated the internship program I had to approach them on my own if I wanted that
internship and what can I offer to them.

Communication plan / Strategy-:


I used both verbal and non-verbal communication strategies because I had to personally go
and meet the person responsible for hiring interns. So oral communication is very important
here and non-verbal communication i.e. using facial expressions, eye contact, etc. is also
very important in this case to show confidence.
Other important strategies I used are “Initiation” and “Negotiation”. Since in this situation I
was the one who was in need of that internship more than they needed an intern I had to
initiate the communication and had to put in the effort. “Negotiation” was very important
because he was not convinced and ready to take me as an intern so I had to negotiate
where I highlighted how I will prove helpful to them and all the skills I possess which can
prove beneficial in the market research during the internship.
Before I went to meet the HR of the company, I made the following plan -:
1) Situation analysis and also the analysis of the communication situation – It was
very important for me to have knowledge about the company and also the current
situation of that time for effective communication.
2) Defined objectives – My objective was clear which was to get an internship also I had
to relay the information that which other goals of the company I can help in
achieving.
3) Understand the audience – Here I needed to be aware of the company & the HR to
know what type of candidate they are looking for, what skills they want, etc. So I
prepared my resume accordingly and conveyed the same to them.
The whole communication was a success as I was selected for the internship in the end.
