While competitive shooters are concerned
with developing a lightning-fast speed load,
the likelihood of an armed citizen finding
him- or herself in a gunfight requiring a speed
load to prevail is extremely remote—the fight
is almost always going to be concluded with
the ammunition in the gun. That said, if you’re
in a fight, as soon as you’re able you should
perform a tactical reload to get the gun back
to full capacity. Keep your head up and scan
for additional threats, as you never know
what’s going to happen next.
On the other hand, you should perform a
tactical reload every time you prepare your
pistol for carrying. Why is that? Well, after
loading the pistol with a full magazine and
running the slide to chamber a round, you’re
essentially performing a tactical reload to top
the gun off to full capacity by inserting a full
magazine. Why start your day with capacity

The problem with lightening the
trigger return or rebound spring is
that once the shooter learns to fire
at anything faster than a snail’s pace,
they’ll quickly find that their trigger
finger can “outrun” the trigger. In
other words, they’re ready to fire
the next shot and are pulling the
trigger before the trigger has fully
reset, binding up the action. Some
competitors even opt for extra-power
rebound springs to prevent this.
It’s not like there’s no valid purpose

reputable companies wouldn’t be

more complex machine than it might
appear at first glance; before the

important to understand what the
modifications do, and whether they’re
necessary for the job at hand.

gun market. The answer? All of those events occurred in 1926.
Coincidentally, 1926 was the last year Savage manufactured
a pistol specifically marketed for personal defense to the
private citizen—until now.
That pistol way back then was a Model 1917, the final iter-
ation of an Elbert Searle-designed compact semi-automatic
that Savage had initially started selling as the Model 1907,
way back before the first War to End All Wars.
With a lineup ranging from pocket pistols for self-
defense, centerfire rifles like the famous lever-action
Model 99, shotguns and rimfire rifles sold under the Stevens
name (a company absorbed by Savage in 1920) and even
Lewis light machine guns for the World War I war effort,
Savage was truly a full-spectrum small-arms manufacturer.
By the late 1980s, though, most of these were long dis-
continued and forgotten, and Savage was primarily a man-
ufacturer of bolt-action rifles and odd-duck combination
guns. To use a lesson learned by a manufacturer in a

Over the last several years writing for Shooting Illustrated, I have
reviewed quite a few revolvers. These were not just “passion pieces”
with nostalgic overtones covering historic, classic wheelguns. All of
these reviews maintained the publication’s focus on self-defense. On
different occasions, both Smith & Wesson and Taurus provided new
models of small-frame revolvers for review. The last Smith was a tita-
nium J-frame chambered in .357 Mag., while the Taurus was rated for
Charter Arms Pit Bull .38 Spl. +P loads. On both guns, I had a chance to work with a local
.45 ACP police officer on active duty who still carries a 2-inch-barreled
revolver on and off duty. Even when working with his SWAT team
and fully equipped with the latest hardware, he carries his small
revolver as a backup gun. He commented that when you reach for
that compact wheelgun, you are down to your last option, which
means you better believe in it.
Colt has upgraded its entire line of “Snake” guns in the last few
years. While the 6- and 8-inch Anacondas and Pythons might be
regarded more as recreational firearms, all of Colt’s new small- and
large-frame revolvers (except the Anaconda) are being offered

.44 Mag./.44 Spl. handguns, several of which are of interest to those wishing to carry
discreetly because they are both simple to operate and can be con-
cealed. The decision to produce these guns in the 21st century is not
just a kindly gesture for those who have been loyal customers of Colt
over the years. These guns are all being manufactured because Colt
knows how immensely effective revolvers can be (and have been) in
keeping people safe, but more importantly, the company knows
consumers still want such handguns.
Ruger’s LCR is a purpose-built firearm based on market research.
