A BIT OF BACKGROUND
Before we go any further, many readers are probably wondering
what exactly the difference between a "bump" and a ballistic
helmet is. It would be fair to say that 99% of helmets you see
on a skirmish field are "Bump" helmets and simply protect
your head from "Bumps" and BB strikes. Whereas a ballistic
helmet is designed to take fragmentation or small calibre
rounds, and deflect or absorb the energy, thus protecting the
wearer. There are ballistic-rated replica helmets available
through overseas sources, but I would never trust my life
with something from a replica company. The FMA Maritime
used in this review is a plastic replica of a ballistic-rated
helmet. As a replica, however, it serves no more function
than a bump helmet and something to mount accessories to.
A bump helmet is just that. It is designed to take basic
bumps and keep the wearer from minor injuries. For example,
a common bump helmet is the type used for biking or
skateboarding and was the inspiration for the Ops-Core FAST
Helmet as the US military used Skateboarding helmets. A classic
example was the helmets used by the US army Delta in the battle of
Mogadishu and Navy SEAL's in the 90's.

There are three main accessories to this helmet package. All three are pretty
evident and we think you'll agree they look right at home.

The first is the helmet cover, which needs no introduction. The second is the
Agilite Helmet Bridge- a Mohican that is a one size fits all helmet accessory
management system allowing you to store accessories including NVG battery
packs, counterweights, IR strobes and cables.
The third and possibly most apparent is the comms package, which is
part of the Peltor Comtac family and a radical departure from what we
would expect for a set of ear domes.
The Comtac IV was announced as the next generation in
communication headsets when it was first launched.
The headset housing, which looks like an upside-down horseshoe,
contains all the electronics, eliminating the need for a large, heavy
external ear dome. Rather than bulky earphones, the user will now wear
small earplugs that integrate communications and hearing protection.
Peltor will provide various sizes of earplugs to ensure a proper fit. The
CONTACT IV also features the same ambient listening capabilities as previous
COMTAC, where external sound is amplified for what Comtac describe as
"situational awareness". At the same time, they cut out loud noises that
could harm your hearing. There is no learning curve since the system's control
interface is the same as in previous models. However, there is also a new 'boost'
feature that allows the user to manually override the audio input to pump up the
volume for those times when higher audio output is necessary. The power supply
uses AAA batteries. Gel ear pads help stabilise the headset and are attached with
a hook and loop tape.
The new COMTAC IV replica is a bit left of centre and very different from the
traditional headsets we have taken for granted on a skirmish field.

The Mayflower system at it's base comprises of two key components - a
plate carrier and a chest rig, however, the system is much more than it's
two individual pieces, working together to provide one of the most well
thought out load baring systems on the market.
The Mayflower Assault Plate Carrier (APC) is designed to provide the
wearer with a high degree of mobility while providing ample surface
area for mounting mission essential pouches. The upper front of the APC
contains an integral admin pouch with internal elastic loops to retain pens,
pencils, chemlites or similar items. The front lower half of the APC has an
integrated kangaroo pouch sized to hold up to three M4 sized magazines.
The shoulder pads are made of a stretch woven material that allows

The PCR is an excellent addition to the Warrior Assault Systems product line. Designed to
work as a compact Chest Rig in stand-alone configuration or in conjunction with Warrior’s

The PCR accommodates 4 x M4 style mags with adjustable bungee retention which allows

The camouflage was also chosen because it identifies its
wearers as Marines to their adversaries while helping
them remain concealed. This was confirmed by a Marine
spokesperson at the launch of MARPAT, who stated:
"We want to be instantly recognisable as a force to be
reckoned with. As such, the U.S. Marine Corps restricts
the use of the camouflage, preventing its use in most
other divisions of the United States military except for
some elements of the U.S. Navy.
The concept of using miniature swatches of colour
as opposed to large splotches is not new. In World War
II, German troops used various patterns similar to the
current German Flecktarn, which involved similar small
dabs of colour on a uniform to provide camouflage.
Interestingly, MARPAT's origins come from two versions
of tigerstripe and an older Rhodesian brushstroke design.
These three samples were then reconstructed using new
shapes and unique colour blends that would allow a more
effective uniform in a greater range of environments.
Arguably, the influence of tigerstripe can still be seen in
the final MARPAT fabrics.
The MARPAT pattern was finally chosen in a run-off
against seven other patterns at the USMC Scout Sniper
Instructor School. One pattern that was dropped later
became AOR1 and 2.
OFF T HE PEG
TRIPLE THREAT
MARPAT's development process from concept to completion took a mere 18 months, the fastest time
for a U.S. military-developed camouflage pattern to be produced.
Initially, three MARPAT patterns were tested: Woodland, Desert, and Urban. While keeping the
rights for Urban, only the Woodland and Desert patterns were adopted by the Marine Corps for
general issue, replacing the U.S. Woodland pattern and the U.S. Three-Colour Desert pattern.
Webbing and equipment worn with MARPAT Woodland and MARPAT Desert is produced in Coyote
Brown, a mid-tone colour common to both the woodland and desert patterns. Although a
digital snow pattern has also been adopted on cold-weather training over-garments, this uses a
different pattern from the Canadian company Hyperstealth.
Authentic MARPAT material is easy to recognise by the "Eagle, Globe, and Anchor" emblem
incorporated into the pattern above the letters "USMC" in both patterns.

HEADS UP
As part of the uniform, there are three different forms of
headgear; the first two are the distinctive marine hat or utility
cover. The cover is an eight-pointed hat with a visor similar to a
baseball cap. It is worn "blocked", that is, creased and peaked,
for a sharper appearance. A version of the Utility cover is also
incorporated in the U.S. Navy's Working Uniform.
The utility cover was first issued in World War II, with the
Herringbone Twill utility uniform issued in 1943. It was based on a
U.S. Army field cap design and a railroad engineer cap. Marines of the
time nicknamed it the raider cap from its use by the Marine Raiders.
BOONIE
The second is the Bonnie hat that really needs no introduction other
than the first Bonnie was a blue cap with an all-around brim that was
issued as part of the 1937 blue denim fatigue uniform that was
nicknamed the "Daisy Mae".
The Bonnie hat as we know it today was first issued during
the Vietnam War, when U.S. Army Green Berets of the
5th Special Forces Group began wearing them in the
field, along with Australian and Army of the Republic
of Vietnam units. Its name is derived from "Boonie",
the abbreviated form of boondocks (itself originally
American military slang derived from Tagalog
bundok, "mountain", during the Philippine–
American War).
HELMET COVER
The third is a helmet cover that was first worn
by French troops during WWI Marine are mainly

the FAST normally ditch their covers in favour
of a bare helmet, which in a lot of examples
are different helmets than those issued to the

The Amphibious Assault Vest, Quick-Release, or FSBE AAV QR, is a lightweight assault vest
system that incorporates both protection and cargo carrying capabilities. Protection includes
soft armour coupled with hard ballistic inserts. Cargo retention capabilities include various
pouches and pockets attached via standard PALS webbing. The full FSBE kit includes the vest,
a throat protector, a groin protector and an assortment of load-bearing pouches. A fully loaded
vest with armour plates can prove quite heavy and is typically used only in high-risk missions.
However, for this project, we have ditched the heavy FSBE and gone back in time even
before the Combat Integrated Releasable Armor System (CIRAS) to the MBSS II system, both
manufactured by Eagle industries. However, we have decided to use a FLYYE version that's
readily available and a fraction of the price of a real MBSS plate carrier, which is a super
lightweight alternative to the much heavier vest issued to the US Marines.
