NOTABLE WRITERS PER PERIOD

SPANISH PERIOD and NATIONALISTIC PERIODS

1. Dr. JOSE RIZAL - Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado Alonzo y Realonda was born on June 19,
1861. His first teacher was his mother, Teodora Alonzo. His pen names are Dimasalang
and Laong Laan.
Works: Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, Mi Ultimo Adios ( My Last Farewell), On the
Indolence of the Filipinos , La Juventud Filipina ( To the Filipino Youth)
2. Marcelo H. Del Pilar is known for his pen names Plaridel, Piping Dilat, Dolores Manabat.
He was born on Cupang, San Nicolas, Bulacan on August 30, 1850.
Works: Pagibig sa Tinubuang Lupa ( Love of Country), Kaiingat Kayo ( be Careful) ,
Dasalan at Tocsohan ( Prayers and Jokes), Ang Kadaquilaan ng Dios ( God’s Goodness)

3. Graciano Lopez Jaena -I n 1888 Filipino expatriate journalist Graciano López


Jaena founded the newspaper La Solidaridad in Barcelona. Throughout its course, La
Solidaridad urged reforms in both religion and government in the Philippines, and it
served as the voice of what became known as the Propaganda Movement. He wrote,
Fray Botod.
4. Mariano Ponce – became an editor-in-chief, biographer and researcher of the
Propaganda Movement. He used Tikbalang, Kalipulako and Naning ad pen names.

8. Jose Palma – he became popular because of his Hymno Nacional Filipino ( The Philippine
National Anthem) which was set to music by Julian Felipe.
