Research Methodology

3.1 Research Design (Data Gathering)

The pursuit of information that can be directly applied to practice is aptly known

as applied research. It is inquiry using the application of scientific methodology with the purpose

of generating empirical observations to solve critical problems in society. It is widely used in

varying contexts, ranging from applied behaviour analysis to city planning and public policy and

to program evaluation. Applied research can be executed through a diverse range of research

strategies that can be solely quantitative, solely qualitative, or a mixed method research design

that combines quantitative and qualitative data slices in the same project. What all the multiple

facets in applied research projects share is one basic commonality—the practice of conducting

research in “non-pure” research conditions because data are needed to help solve a real-life

problem. The goal of this research is to determine the applicability of theory and principles by

testing hypotheses within specific settings.

The researchers will try to find solutions on how they can apply Bioclimatic Architecture

Design to the Proposed Mixed-use Commercial and Residential Development Project to create

comfort conditions in buildings by understanding the microclimate and resulting design

strategies that include natural ventilation, daylighting, and passive heating and cooling. This

research design aims to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency

and moderation in use of materials, energy, and development space, both in construction

processes and resulting infrastructure.

3.2 Data Analysis and Presentation

3.2.1 Site Selection

Site Selection coexistent with the formulation of activity objectives enable the flexibility of

the site potentiality and integrity on its natural and cultural features with its design. To progress

the development of the site for such project the program shall be prepared properly. The

objectives are determined by the needs since the latter evolve from the formulation of the

program. Program development is based on the factors such as construction of the site,

requirements and size of the buildings and materials used. The program is a continuous vapor

since the factors being studied stopped steaming. The completely developed program

composed of facilities, their required completion and priority to construction.

3.2.1.1 Site Criteria

Vegetation- the site should be fertile with plentiful grass and leafy trees to mobilize the

healthy environment and serve as the natural canopy for strollers and radiation diffusers for the

site.

Transit and Traffic - the site should lessen vehicular activities resulting in congested

traffic events on or adjacent site or public access ways.

Regulatory Controls - the site should be flexible to fire lanes for fire safety addressing.

Orientation - the site must be oriented that it’s suppose structure may maximize useful

heat from the sun during rainy season and minimize it during the summer.

Zoning regulations - there should no nuisance that might happen between the site and

adjacent zone area at the time this regulation is effective.

Accessibility - the site to whatever extent should transverse any road to determine if it is

location wise.

Utilities – the site should limits to have such utilities such as sanitary and storm water

systems, water, gas, steam, electricity, telephone and cable.

Strategically – the site should be strategic in location to allow opportunities.

Safety and Security – the capability to safeguard life forms from hazards and risks of

accidents and natural calamities within the site.

Feasibility - the degree or extent of the site to assure the development to generate

income.

Views – the aesthetics geography captivates the attention of the ones viewing from site.

Topography - the slope and level of the land, whether the land is flat and plain, or in

sloping.

3.2.1.3 Site Justification

Batangas City is classified as one of the fastest urbanizing cities of the Philippines, and

is known as the "Industrial Port City of Calabarzon". It is home to the Batangas International

Port, one of the busiest passenger and container terminals in the Philippines. It also hosts one

of the largest oil refineries in the country, three natural gas power plants, and several other

major industries. In addition, the city also serves as the educational, industrial and the

transportation center of the province.

3.3 Site Data

3.3.1 Micro Site

Pallocan Silangan is a barangay in Batangas City, in the province of Batangas. Its

population as determined by the 2020 Census was 3,286. This represented 0.94% of the total

population of Batangas City.

The household population of Pallocan Silangan in the 2015 Census was 2,936 broken

down into 676 households or an average of 4.34 members per household.

According to the 2015 Census, the age group with the highest population in Pallocan

Silangan is 5 to 9, with 283 individuals. Conversely, the age group with the lowest population

is 75 to 79, with 24 individuals.

Combining age groups together, those aged 14 and below, consisting of the young

dependent population which include infants/babies, children and young adolescents/teenagers,

make up an aggregate of 28.24% (829). Those aged 15 up to 64, roughly, the economically

active population and actual or potential members of the work force, constitute a total of 66.25%

(1,945). Finally, old dependent population consisting of the senior citizens, those aged 65 and

over, total 5.52% (162) in all.

The computed Age Dependency Ratios mean that among the population of Pallocan

Silangan, there are 43 youth dependents to every 100 of the working age population; there are

8 aged/senior citizens to every 100 of the working population; and overall, there are 51

dependents (young and old-age) to every 100 of the working population.

The median age of 27 indicates that half of the entire population of Pallocan Silangan are aged

less than 27 and the other half are over the age of 27.
