Writings

1877

"When will the night come to protect me so that I can sleep deeply?" In his diary entry on September 11,
1878, Rizal (then just 16 years old) described his upbringing in Calamba. "Only God is aware.
Meanwhile, as I sadly write these pages, I am saddened to be apart from the people I love most in the
world at this time of year."

Realization:

I realized that The Friars ruled the Philippines during Rizal's time, or in the late 18th century. These friars
had complete influence over the Philippine educational system, and they were able to own a variety of
institutions from primary through tertiary levels of learning.
