EXERCISE 4.3:
EXERCISE 4.4:
A gas mixture contacts with a hydrocarbon oil (solvent) for a long time and reaches the equilibrium
condition at 2x105 N/m2 total pressure and 24°C. At this condition, the gas mixture has the following
composition: methane 60%, ethane 20%, propane 8%, n-butane 6%, n-pentane 6%. Calculate the
composition of the equilibrium solution. (Neglect the solubility of methane in the oil)

EXERCISE 4.5:
In a mass transfer equipment working at pressure 3.1 atm, mass transfer coefficient in gas phase and liquid
phase is 1.07 kmol/m2.h.mol fraction (y = 1) and 22 kmol/m2.h.mol fraction (x = 1) respectively. The
equilibrium phase of liquid and gas phase is corresponding to Henry’s law: p* = 0.08.106x (mmHg).
a. Determine overall mass transfer coefficient Ky and Kx
b. Compare mass transfer resistances in gas phase and in liquid phase.
EXERCISE 4.6
An acetone-air mixture containing 0.015 mole fraction of acetone has the mole fraction reduced to 1 per
cent of this value by countercurrent absorption with water in a packed tower. The gas flowrate is 1 kg/m2s
of air and the water enters at 1.6 kg/m2s. For this system, Henry’s law holds and ye=1.75 x, where ye is the
mole fraction of acetone in the vapour in equilibrium with a mole fraction x in the liquid. How many
overall transfer units are required?
EXERCISE 4.7:
An absorption tower is used to separate NH3 from a gas mixture. The feed flow rate of gas mixture is
6200 m3/h at 30oC and 1.2 at; the feed NH3 concentration is 8% v/v, concentration of NH3 after absorption
is 1.25 % v/v. Fresh water is used as solvent at 30oC. The used solvent is 1.3 minimum solvent and
equilibrium equation is Y*=1.45X
Determine:
a. Solvent flow rate in m3/h?
b. Outlet NH3 concentration in liquid phase?
c. Number of theoretical trays required for separation?
d. Height of packed tower (If a packed tower is used). Given: Heights of transfer unit based on gas and
liquid phases are 0.18 and 0.8 m, respectively.
EXERCISE 4.8
An absorption tower is used to treat a flue gas flow containing 6% (v/v) SO2 at 1 at and 30°C by using
3
water as solvent. The feed water is fresh water with a flow rate of 8 m /h (the density of water ρ =
3
1000 kg/m at working condition). Determine:
a. Feed flue gas flow rate in kmol/h with the out SO concentration is 1% v/v?
2
b. The number of theoretical trays required for tray absorber, if using tray tower?
c. Height of packed absorber, if using packed tower? Height of overall trasfer units (HTU) based on
gas phase is 1.1 m.

Given: Used solvent is equal to 1.4 minimum solvent; the equilibrium equation at 30°C is Y = 0.6X
with X = mole SO2/mole water and Y = mole SO2/mole air.
