Drama

● Drama is a story written to be performed by actors. It’s usually presents its action:

 Through actors: success of the play depends almost on the actors skills.
 On the stage: special effects / lightings / etc… - never bring animals or armies.
 Before on audience: not supposed to be talking / eating / only laughing.

Actors

Stage Audience

● Success of a play depends on the skills of the actor, but because we didn’t have a narrator in
drama (usually), playwrights use other techniques:

1) Soliloquy: It when the actor speaks out his mind on the stage (actor alone on the stage)
thinks aloud.
A speech given by a single character while that character is alone on stage
2) Aside: When the actor speaks out his mind on the stage (actor is not alone on the stage)
performed by a character while other characters are on stage; the information in an
aside is not heard by the other characters on stage, even though they may be standing
very close by; it is intended to convey the character’s private thoughts to the
audience. Other characters on stage at that time may freeze, to show that the words
being said are not being overheard; other times, the other characters will go about their
business but ignore the character giving the aside.
3) Chorus: (Minor actors on the stage)
in the Greek times 2000bc there were no curtains so the chorus used to separate one
scene from another like curtains in the modern time. They comment on the action of
the play and interpret the situation. They reinforce the emotions.
they stay on a lower platform / they sing and dance / they don’t speak to the main
characters / charogus is their leader.

● Genre of drama

 Tragedy: play that ends unhappily, end with death.

 Comedy: play that ends happily, end with marriage.
