ES 12 WBC1 Dynamics of Rigid Bodies Integration of Topics on Kinetics

Practice Problem Second Semester AY 2017-2018

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY PLEDGE: On my honor, I will not give nor receive inappropriate aid in this exercise.

NAME & Signature: SECTION:

Problem Solving For items 1A to 1I, write all solutions (or explanations), including all relevant diagrams and
assumptions on your answer sheet. Answers will not be credited if not preceded by a solution and/or
explanation.

Rigid bar ES is released at the position shown with no

angular velocity and with its mass center having a speed of
5 m/s in the direction shown in the figure. If it was
observed that just before rigid bar ES hits bar ML (bar ML is
initially at rest), the velocity of the mass center of ES is
purely horizontal. Answer the following items.

REMARKS: The figure shows the orientation of the bars in

a vertical plane. As such, gravity will play a major role in
the analysis.

mES = mML = 6.00 kg

For 1A to 1D, consider the instant right before bar ES hits bar ML.

1A) [15 pts] What is the angular velocity of bar ES?

Ans: zero
1B) [10 pts] What is the velocity of the mass center of bar ES?
Ans: 4.330 m/s, horizontal
1C) [10 pts] Determine the time of flight of bar ES.
Ans: 0.255 sec
1D) [15 pts] Calculate the total vertical distance traveled by the mass center of rod ES?
Ans: 0.319 m
1E) [15 pts] Draw the Impulse-Momentum Diagram of bar ES just before, during, and just after impact. Label
all the vectors and the relevant points in the diagram.

1F) [25 pts] Draw the Impulse-Momentum Diagram of the system of bar ES and bar ML just before, during, and
just after impact. Label all the vectors and the relevant points in the diagram.

1G) [60 pts] If the coefficient of restitution between the bars is 0.6, determine the angular velocity of bar ES
right after impact.
Ans: 1.514 rad/s ccw
1H) [30 pts] Just after impact, what is the magnitude of the reaction exerted by pin P?
Ans: 78.292 N
1I) [20 pts] What is the maximum angular displacement 𝜃 (measured with respect to the vertical) reached by bar
ML after impact?
Ans: 70.14o
