GRADE 4 (QUARTER 2)
Module 8
I. Title of Material/Introduction:
Visualizing Subtraction of a Fraction from a Whole
Number
II. Objectives:
IV. Pre-Test:
Mother baked a cake for the snacks of her family. She decided
1
to give of it to their neighbor. What part of the cake was left
4
for them?
3

1. Which figure would represent ?
4
a. b. c.
II. Select from the box the correct number sentence for each
figure shown.
1. 2. 3. 4.

V. Learning Activities:
Learning Situation 1:
Blanca bought one whole cheesy buko pie for the birthday of her
daughter Ave. It is one of Ave’s favorite foods. When Ave’s brother
𝟏
saw the pie, he ate of it. What part was left for Ave?
𝟒
1 1
4 4
This circle represents Ave’s buko pie. It is divided into four equal
𝟏
parts because the part eaten by his brother was . The shaded part
𝟒
shows the part eaten by Ave’s brother. So, adding the parts left for Ave it
𝟑
is or 3 of the 4 equal parts (white part).
𝟒
4
from a whole number?
• First change the whole number into improper fraction with the
same numerator and denominator by copying the
denominator of the fraction to be deducted.
numerator
𝟏
1 whole -
𝟒 denominator
The denominator of the fraction tells into how many parts a whole is
divided. Since the denominator of the fraction is 4 then, 1 whole will be
𝟒
changed to . Using the fractions, the number sentence would be:
𝟒
Learning Situation 2:
Hannah is about to eat a cup cake. Suddenly her pet dog Spot
approaches and barks at her. What Hannah did was to divide the
cupcake into two equal parts and gave one part to Spot. What part
was left to Hannah?
𝟏 𝟏
The cup cake was divided into two equal parts.
𝟐 𝟐
So the number sentence will be:
numerator
𝟏 𝟐 𝟏 𝟐−𝟏 𝟏
1 - = - = =
𝟐 𝟐 𝟐 𝟐 𝟐 denominator
If you were Hannah would you also do the same? Why? Why not?
What characteristics did Hannah show? Do you love your pets too?
How do you show your love and care for your pets?

Learning Situation 3:

3 - =? Let us visualize it using this
𝟔
𝟔
1 1
𝟔
Only 1 whole will be changed to fraction. Looking at the illustration,
there are 2 wholes and the third one is divided into six equal parts
because the denominator of the fraction is 6. The shaded part that is to
2 4
be subtracted is , therefore the remaining part is 2 .
6 6
• In subtracting, just get one from the whole number and
change this to improper fraction. Use the numeral in the
denominator.
𝟐 𝟔
3 - 2 ( subtract only the numerators)
𝟔 𝟔
6 -2=4
bring down
𝟐
- (copy the denominator) 6

REMEMBER:
Practice Task 1 - Subtract the fraction from the whole number and show
by illustrations.
1 3 5
1. 1 - = 2. 1 - = 3. 1 - =
3 7 8
Practice Task 3 - Read the problem and solve for the answer.
VIII. Assignments
Using a sheet of paper, draw any shape, cut it out and make a model

of 1 .
