SOFA SYLLABLES

SOFA NAMES or Solfege - also known as "Singing Names" or name of tones. They are the

DO, RE, MI, FA, SO, LA and TI.

PITCH NAMES - they are the first seven letters in the English alphabet. A B C D E F and G.

Staff - Each line and space indicate the pitch.

Ledger Line - indicates low or high pitch.

To identify its corresponding names, look at the illustration below.

The G clef is the most used. It is placed on the second line of the staff. So, the music note placed

on the second line of the staff is a G:

The Treble clef is used on sheet music for piano (right hand), guitar, violin, flute, oboe, clarinets,

saxophones, horn, trumpet… For the singers, the Treble clef is used with the following voices:

tenor, contralto, alto, mezzo-soprano, and soprano.

The Bass clef is used on sheet music for piano (left hand), cello, double bass, bass guitar,

bassoon, trombone, tuba, timpani… Baritone and bass voice use the Bass clef too.

The F clef located on the fourth line of the staff is called Bass Clef (the F clef on the third line is

now only used for musical transposition). If the F key is placed on the fourth line, the music note

on the fourth line of the music staff will be an F and the names of other notes of the scale will

change accordingly:

PITCH NAMES

PITCH- The quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it, the degree of

highness or lowness of a tone.

PITCH NAME- Pitch Names LIE The system of five lines and four spaces is called a STAFF.

Basic pitch names are designated by the alphabet from A to G.

Two types of Pitch– perfect and relative pitch.

Perfect pitch (also called absolute pitch) is the ability to identify or re-create a given musical note

without the help of a reference tone. Famous singers with perfect pitch include Michael Jackson,

Mariah Carey, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Relative pitch is the ability to recognize and produce pitches in relation to each other.

A is the lowest frequency

G is the highest
HOW TO READ PITCH NAMES

TREBLE CLEF
The pitch names or letter names appearing on each line of the treble clef consist of E on the first

line, G on the second line, B on the third line, D on the fourth line and F on the fifth line. Just

remember the acronym Every Good Boy Does Fine.

The pitch names or letter names that appear on each treble clef space consist of F on the first

space, A on the second space, C on the third space and E on the fourth space. Just remember the

word FACE.

BASS CLEF
The pitch names or letter names appearing on each staff bass clef line consist of G on the first

line, B on the second line, D on the third line, F on the fourth line and A on the fifth line. Just

remember the acronym Good Boy Does Fine Always.

The pitch names or letter names that appear on each bass clef space consist of A on the first

space, C on the second space, E on the third space and G on the fourth space. Just remember the

acronym All Cows Eat Grass.
