5.2.3 Fire source

5.2.3.1 The fire source is to be in accordance with the Standard for Residential Sprinklers for
Fire-Protection Service, UL 1626 with the modifications as specified in 5.2.2.4.
5.2.3.1 effective May 22, 2009

5.2.4 Sprinkler installation

5.2.4.1 Residential sprinklers are to be installed in the test room as specified in Figures 5.1 to 5.12 for
each fire test. For all sprinkler styles, the sprinklers installed in the doorways shall be as follows:

a) The same heat responsive element and temperature rating as the other sprinklers within the
room; and

b) Installed such that the center of the heat responsive element is 2 inches (50.8 mm) below
the top of the doorway.
5.2.4.1 effective May 22, 2009

5.2.4.2 Provisions shall be made to ensure that the sprinklers installed in the doorway are not wetted by
the sprinklers discharging water within the test room.
5.2.4.2 effective May 22, 2009

5.2.4.3 The residential sprinklers located at the ceiling are to be installed in reducing pipe fittings having
a 1 inch (25 mm) inlet and an outlet the same size as the sprinkler inlet and be supplied with water through
1 inch (25 mm) piping. The minimum nipple length leading to the sprinkler fitting shall not be less than 10
inches (254 mm).
5.2.4.3 effective May 22, 2009

5.2.4.4 Pendent and upright sprinklers are to be installed with their deflectors located 3 inches (76 mm)
below the ceiling or as specified in the installation instructions if other than 3 inches (76 mm) is specified.
A pendent sprinkler also intended to be installed as a recessed pendent sprinkler shall be tested in the
most recessed position in lieu of 3 inches (76 mm) below the ceiling. Flush and concealed pendent
sprinklers are to be installed in their intended location as specified in the installation instructions. Pendent,
upright, flush, recessed pendent and concealed pendent sprinklers are to be tested in two orientations for
each fire location. One test is to be orientated such that the sprinkler frame arms or deflector pins are NG
parallel to the short room wall and a second test is to be conducted with the sprinkler frame arms or HE
deflector pins rotated 90 degrees.

5.3 Test method

5.3.1 The test room is to have an ambient air temperature of 80 ±5°F (27 ±3°C) measured at the
thermocouple located 3 inches (76 mm) below the ceiling in the center of the room. All water from previous
testing shall be removed such that there is no visible water on the floor, ceiling, or walls.
5.3.1 effective May 22, 2009

5.3.2 The temperatures at each thermocouple location are to be continuously recorded during the test
using 20 AWG (0.81 mm) chromel-alumel thermocouples or thermocouples providing equivalent
temperature measuring results. When water impingement impacts the thermocouple measurement, the
thermocouples are to be shielded from water impingement using metallic tape attached to the wire. The
tape is to be formed into an umbrella shape, large enough to protect the thermocouple ends.
5.3.2 effective May 22, 2009

5.3.3 Sixteen ounces (0.5 L) of water and eight ounces (0.24 L) of heptane are to be placed in a pan
directly below the wood crib located 2 inches (50 mm) from the wall panels.
5.3.3 effective May 22, 2009

5.3.4 The heptane in the pan located beneath the crib is to be ignited and the heptane soaked cotton
wicks are to be ignited immediately following the heptane pan ignition.
5.3.4 effective May 22, 2009

5.3.5 The fire test is to be conducted for 30 minutes after the ignition of the wood crib, unless after 10
minutes, all the combustibles are extinguished or only the wood crib is sustaining combustion at which
point the test is to be terminated. The water flow to the sprinklers is to be the minimum flow rate specified
in the installation instructions for the sprinkler coverage area tested.
