Lab10: Inverters
Shamma Saber / H00370759
Introduction:
In this lab, we will be experimenting on inverter circuits, an inverter (or power inverter) is
a power electronics device which used to convert DC voltage into AC voltage. Although DC
power is used in small electrical gadgets, most household equipment runs on AC power.
Hence, we need an efficient way to convert DC power into AC power, so we use the
inverter.
Objectives:
1. Use 555 timer in a stable mode to create a continuous pulse waveform that can be
used in power electronics trigger circuits.
2. Build a single phase square inverter.
Before you run the simulation make sure that S1 is ON and S2 is OFF.

Discussion:
The inverters are classified according to their output waveforms with the three common
types being the square wave, the pure sine wave, and the modified sine wave.
The square wave is simple and cheaper; however, it has a low power quality compared to
the other two. The modified square wave provides a better power quality (THD~ 45%) and is
suitable for most electronic equipment. These have rectangular pulses that have dead spots
between the positive half cycle and the negative half cycle (THD about 24%).
The true sine wave inverter has the best waveform with the lowest THD of about 3%.
However, it is the most expensive and used in applications such as medical equipment,
stereos, laser printers and other applications requiring sinusoidal waveforms. These are also
Inverters are used for a variety of applications that range from small car adapters to
As standalone inverters
Conclusion:
In the end of this lab, we learned how to Use 555 timer in a stable mode and, we learned
how to create a continuous pulse waveform that can be used in power electronics trigger
circuits. We Build a single-phase square inverter using multisim and measure the output
voltage.
