Work While You Study
The option to work while studying is one of Canada’s biggest selling points to
international students.
You can work up to 20 hours per week. You can also take up multiple jobs to make up
these hours as long as you continue to meet the conditions of your study permit. You
can work full-time, that is 40 hours if you are on a scheduled break, such as winter and
summer holidays, or a fall or spring reading week. You are free to work overtime or
work two part-time jobs that add up to a higher than usual number of hours. You must
be a full-time student both before and after the break to work full-time. You can’t work
during a break that comes before you start your very first school semester.
If you work while studying in Canada, you can easily pay for your own living expenses -
and most Indian students in Canada work alongside college.

TYPES OF COURSES
IN CANADA AND
TOP INSTITUTIONS
While ‘university’ and ‘college’ are generally used interchangeably in
most of the world, the two are very different types of educational
institutions in Canada.
UNIVERSITIES
90+ Universities
11,000+ Degree Programmes
130+ Colleges
Leap Scholar has partnered with all the top universities of Canada including University
of Alberta, McGill University and University of Toronto. International students can apply
for both Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree at these universities. Bachelor’s degree
programs are typically of three or four years duration, and Master’s degree programs
are typically of two years duration.
COLLEGES
Canada has over 130 colleges. They focus more on applied and technical education.
Students who complete programs at colleges receive a diploma, not a degree. After
completing Bachelor’s degrees, international students can apply for postgraduate
diplomas at Canadian colleges, which can be one to two years in duration. Leap Scholar
has the largest partner network of 100+ Canadian colleges, including Seneca College,
Centennial College and Bow Valley College. The Canadian education system is very
flexible - for instance, after completion of one postgraduate diploma, students can opt
for another one-year diploma. The fees at colleges are generally lower than that of
universities in Canada. Moreover, students do not need to submit a Statement of
Purpose (SoP) or Letters of Recommendation (LOR) for application to colleges. The
postgraduate diploma program is extremely popular among international students in
Canada.

REQUIREMENTS
FOR STUDYING
IN CANADA
A student must have completed 12th grade in India to be eligible
for admission to a three or four year Bachelor's degree program
in Canada. There are no centralized Canada-wide entrance tests,
each institute sets its own admission standards and assesses the
qualifications of each applicant individually. The main factors that
the admissions committee focuses on are past academic
performance and proficiency in English. In case you want to
pursue a specialised course such as engineering you may be
required to have taken related subjects in your 12th grade.
Depending on whether you want to study a Masters program or
a Postgraduate Diploma, the entry requirements can vary.
If you’re under 18, you don’t have to be fully vaccinated.
Leap Scholar guides students wishing to pursue any course in Canada to pick the right
university/college suited to their profile and needs. Depending on whether you want to
study a Bachelor’s program, a Master’s program or a Diploma, the entry requirements
can vary.
09
CANADIAN
STUDENT VISA
To gain entry into Canada and study there, each
international student requires a study permit and student
visa. You can apply for the study permit and visa once you
have received an offer of admission from a Canadian
university/college and paid the tuition deposit.
10
Under the SDS, visa processing time is only 20 days. Students applying for SDS must
meet the following eligibility criteria:
Leap Scholar offers guidance to all students for obtaining a visa under the SDS scheme.
11
AFTER POST-GRADUATION -
PATHWAY TO
PERMANENT
RESIDENCY (PR)
After spending a few years studying in Canada,
many international students decide that they
want to move to Canada permanently.
A job holder in Canada is eligible to apply for an extension of PGWP. The application
must be done at least 90 days prior to the expiration date and the applicant must also
hold a valid passport for the same. Please refer to www.cic.gc.ca to learn more about
the rules in detail.
There are several permanent resident categories that you may fit into, including the
Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, and the Provincial
Nominee Program. Some of those categories require eligible Canadian work
experience. If you want to work in Canada after you graduate from your studies, you
must apply for a work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.
Also after the completion of PGWP, one may be eligible for Permanent Residency
depending on the skills, job, and a few other factors. International students in Canada
can benefit when applying for the Express Entry program for Canadian PR as they are
eligible for up to 30 points thanks to their Canadian education.
