There are certain issues that we may face while selecting a topic for our research

paper. One example is when we choose a topic that is far too big or broad to address.
A good topic should deal with a SPECIFIC problem or concern. Hence, the following
serve as guidelines for narrowing down a broad topic:
1. Choose a general topic while keeping the extent of your topic in mind
2. Make your topic into a question. To come up with specific ideas to narrow down
your topic, think about the following question areas.
3. Present a thorough explanation of your topic. Do not make it too lengthy; just a
brief explanation would do
4. Create your own visual aid for your idea, where you may include all of the terms
or aspects related to your research topic. This visual aid may help you to be
organized and may help you to consider different terms or aspects that can be
tackled within your topic
5. Make a list of any additional terminology or details concerning your topic. Make
use of the terms you came up with in your own visual aid or concept map. Only
use the terms that are related to your topic and terms that interests you the
most
6. Gradually transform your topic into a more comprehensive or precise phrase or
sentence, which may really aid you in finalizing a highly specific topic.
7. Use or apply demographic characteristics such as age group, occupation, ethnic
group, gender, and so on. This might serve as your population's characteristics.

Broad Topic Area

It is important to remember not to
generalize your topic to the point
where you find too many sources
or too much information, which
may take you in a wide range of
directions. However, do not make
Narrow it so narrow that you find very
Topic
little or no information on it.
