History of JTA
The JTA came into existence as
early as in the late Nineteenth
Century. The education sector in
Jamaica was well established.
However, there was no national
forum through which the collective
voices of the teachers could be
heard. During this period, there
were a number of teachers
associations that existed. However,

unions or professional organization.
It was many decades later, in the
year 1964 that the Jamaica
Teachers' Association came into
being when the instruments
