OBJECTIVE : 1. Read and write words with long /a/ in simple sentences.
Values: Gratitude
Say: To properly pronounce the “Long a”, open your mouth with lips spread
out. Keep your tongue in the middle of your mouth to make the
sound.
Everybody, open your mouth with lips spread out then keep your
tongue in the middle of your mouth to make the sound /ai/, /a-e/,
/ay/.
(Show slides for the more examples and ask the pupils to repeat after
you.)
Class, there is a “Magic Rule” which states that when a word contains
letter “e” at the end, it is usually silent and the preceding vowel has
the long sound, such as:
Say: You will sing along with a video of a song about “Long a”. Follow the
movement of guitar’s head that means you will move your head from
left to right and snaps your fingers.
ACTIVITIES:
Say: Let us see if you remember the name of the pictures presented in the
song.
(Click the next slide after showing each picture to check if the
answer of the pupils are correct. Then he/she will ask the
pupils to repeat the word after him/her.)

Ask: Which part of each word can you find the “Long a”?
(middle, medial)
(Read the passage aloud first, modeling fluent reading. Next, the
pupils will do it.)
Say: Listen carefully as I will read aloud the story titled “Cake for
Kate”. Then you will read it by yourselves after.
Jake bakes a cake. He takes the cake to Kate. “Did you bake this cake Jake?” Kate asks.
“Yes”, he says.
Together, Kate and Jake cut the cake. “Oh, thank you, Jake”, Kate adds. “It is your
birthday”, Jake smiles.
Ask:
Who bakes the cake? (Jake bakes the cake.)
Who eats the cake? (Kate and Jake eat the cake.)
Who thanks Jake? (Kate thanks Jake.)
What is the cake for? (The cake for Kate’s birthday)
Have you received a cake during your birthday? (Yes/No)
How did you feel when you receive the cake?
(Answer varies)
Why? (Answer varies)
What will you say if somebody gives you a gift?
(I will say “Thank you…”)
Say: Yes, always say thank you when somebody gives you
something, be thankful.
Ask: What are the words in the story with long /a/ ?
(Background)
Say: It’s Kate’s birthday and Jake wants to surprise Kate. Aside
from the cake which he placed inside the case, he also
brought with him other things. Let’s find out what are these as
we recite the story chant in the video.
(Play the video on Phonic Story Chant with Long Vowel /a/
sound.)
Say: Group yourselves into two, one for boys and one for girls.
Each group will recite along with the video.
Say: All boys will stand at the left side and girls at the right side.
Choose a representative for your group to do “Bato Bato Pick”.
Whoever loss will be the first one to present.

I. Directions: Read orally the short story. Shake your hands up if the
word has long /a/.
It’s Jake’s birthday! This time, Kate and Nate made a surprise for him.
They bake a marble cake with a heart shape. It’s raining, but for their friend’s sake,
they go to the lake with their red cape.
Jake was with a rake sleeping near the lake. Alas! He was awake when
Kate and Nate gave him a blue cape! Tonight, they plan to have a dinner date.
II. Directions: Write the words with long /a/ found in the story “Cake and
Cape for Jake”.
