LET’S LEARN

The love of language is one of the main reasons why people read and
celebrate literature. Literature represents the very best of human expression
which some have faded from memory but remain relevant to our
contemporary human condition.

DEFINITION OF LITERATURE
The word literature (came from the Greek word litera which means
letter) is the art of written work, and is not confined to published sources
(although, under some circumstances, unpublished sources can also be
exempt). The word literature literally means "things made from letters" and
the term "letters" is sometimes used to signify "literature," as in the figures
of speech "arts and letters" and "man of letters."
Literature is defined as the total creative, imaginative durable writings
belonging to a given language or people of the past and the present.
Literature faithfully expresses and reproduces life in an artistic manner by
focusing on the significant human experience.(Prof. Radicon P. Bernarte,
PUP)
Literature as vital and dynamic force has played an important part in
the development of society and civilization. If we scan the pages of history,
we shall be amazed at the role it has played at different times in various
countries in shaping and influencing cultural development.
True literature is a faithful reproduction of life, executed in an artistic
pattern. (Philippine Literature, Teofilo del Castillo y Tuazon 1974)
. Literature may be classified according to a variety of systems,
including language, national origin, historical period, genre, and subject
matter

MEDIUM OF LITERATURE
Medium in art refers to the material or means which the artist uses to
objectify his feeling or thought: pigment in painting, stone, wood, and metal
in sculpture; various building materials in architecture; sound in music;
and body movements in the dance.
Authors and writers use words and language as their medium in
literature.
Literature and music are classified as auditory and time arts because
its medium can be heard and expressed in time. For example are the
folktales and folklores of Philippine ancient literature which were passed on
through the word of mouth from generation to generation.
LET’S STUDY AND ANALYZE THESE

Amado V. Hernandez is one of the most awarded in literature stature.

He is a resident of Tondo , Manila and the spokesman of the poor and
underprivileged. His poetry and dramas are projections, if not, affirmations
of his belief in dynamic social justice and plea for richer and fuller life.

Study the given work of Amado V. Hernandez entitled “The

Blacksmith”. Answer the questions after the selection.

THE BLACKSMITH

A piece of iron from the mountain

By the tongue of fire he softened;
In smithy patiently he hammered
And shaped according to his will.

After a while, it became a tool,

That piece of iron had become a plow-head;
The fields peacefully it tilled,
At planting season happily planted.

But one day, there was trouble.

The whole country was a boiling volcano
The citizens formed an army
Because fighting had surged aloft!

The old plow-head was burned anew

And hammered in a hurry;
It became a cutlass that demanded
Vengeance for an aggrieved race.

A piece of iron that has no sheen

Has a value incalculable,
As a plow-head, life-giver to all;
As a weapon, a defender of the nation.

Look at the blacksmith, just in a corner!

Iron that has no pride for itself,
But in the blacksmith’s soiled hands,
There it is, giving life and freedom.
-Amado V. Hernandez and translated by
Dr. Jose Villa Panganiban
