Assignment- Seven traditions and some theories

Communication Theory

1. Watch the film "Maynila sa kuko ng liwanag". Then, explain what tradition in
communication theories would explain the film in terms of its visual storytelling
and screen play.

At the time Martial Law was declared, the film "Maynila sa kuko ng liwanag,"
directed by Catalino Ortiz Brocka, better known as Lino Brocka, was released in
1975. I watched it and could indeed said that that it is an extremely painful movie
that resembles how community treats people according to their social status, and
how they are disrespected and just not treated correctly.

The film portrays the story of a homeless man who turned into a callboy after
having lost his job on a construction site to earn enough money for his everyday
needs. I saw a scene from the film which shown in our community as an entire and
how it has become incredibly improper to the poor, including such construction
workers for whom the pay rates are still so negligible that those that can't also
support provide for their families. after just a long day of work.

According to my understanding, the communication tradition in the film that will

provide an explanation is the phenomenology theory, which typically refers to the
intentional explanation of daily life from the perspective of the person who lives it.
As an outcome, the phenomenological tradition places a high value on people's
understandings of their own life experience. It is indicated in this that neither two
individuals have the same life story or beliefs because we all have our own life
stories. We can't understand what happened because we can't understand what
other people have been going through. It focuses on the study of an individual's
lived experiences in the world. The Semiotics theory can also be seen in the film
because every scene or action of the characters in the film desires to express
something as the Semiotics theory implies the study of signage. In the scene where
he is still in the province, for example. Julio that there are times when he travels
back in time to remember his girlfriend's memories, there is a subliminal story that
he aims to convey in the film. The critical theory can also be seen in other parts of
the film because the film portrays the negative sides of Manila both to citizens and
individuals from the province. Julio worked on a construction site where his boss
treated him poorly when it came to receiving their pay.

In the film, you can see the difference between life in the province and life in
Manila. While in the province there is no noise and the only thing you can hear is the
whistling of animals, throughout Manila you can hear different kinds of sounds of
cars whooshing sound around. I could perhaps explain from in this shot that this
movie might very well represent daily life feasibly. The film portrays social issues
that have been present in the past and continue to exist today.

2. Among all the media theories that we discuss, which of it is your most
favorite? And how does this theory relate your everyday use of media?

Every scene in the movie taught me something, and it made me appreciate my life
even though I know many people aspire to be like me but don't have enough supplies,
and one day I hope to be the type of person who is willing to open my hands to help
others who appreciate that as well. But one of my favorite media theories is the
Agenda Setting Theory, which holds that the internet doesn't really tell people
what to do but rather what they should do. In our daily lives, the success of a
variety of social development problems is strongly intertwined. This viewpoint is
related to the mass media's "agenda-setting" theory. Despite its origins in political
communication research, agenda setting's focus and research methods broaden
over and above governmental environments to a broad range of public issues.
Despite its origins in political communication studies, agenda setting's scope and
research applications extend beyond political settings to a wide range of public
issues. And, as a mass communication student, it is essential for me to understand
agenda setting theory because he explores agenda setting theory in the connection
of the media with the community. As a future practitioner, I need to understand
this and see how it will impact my daily life of using media.
