Learning Objectives
In this module, the NSTP CWTS students will:

a. identify their traits using the four quadrants


of the JOHARI window;
b. list down their strengths and weaknesses;
c. explain the two paths of self-awareness; and
d. make a reflection paper on their journey of
self discovery.
What is self awareness ?
Self Awareness
It is an “awareness of one's own
personality or individuality”.

It is not to be confused with


consciousness in the sense of qualia.
While consciousness is being aware
of one's own environment and body
and lifestyle, self-awareness
is the recognition of that awareness.

Johari Window

What is Johari Window?
The Johari window is a technique that helps
people better understand their relationship with
themselves and others.

It is necessary to improve self-awareness and


personal development among individuals when
they are in a group.

The ‘Johari’ window model is a convenient


method used to achieve this task of
understanding and enhancing communication
between the members in a group.
American psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham developed this model in 1955.

● The idea was derived as the upshot of the group dynamics in University of California and
was later improved by Joseph Luft.
● The name ‘Johari’ came from joining their first two names. This model is also denoted as
feedback/disclosure model of self-awareness.
● A four paned “window” as illustrated above, divides personal awareness into four different
types, as represented by its four quadrants: open, hidden, blind, and unknown.
● The lines dividing the four panes are like window shades, which can move as an interaction
progresses.
● In the exercise, someone picks a number of adjectives from a list, choosing ones they feel
describe their own personality.
● The subject's peers then get the same list, and each picks an equal number of adjectives
that describe the subject. These adjectives are then inserted into a two-by-two grid of four
cells.
What are the parts of
Johari Window and what do
they mean?
OPEN /PUBLIC AREA
● It is called public area because it speaks of the things/traits about you that are
considered as “KNOWN TO ME, AND KNOWN TO OTHERS”. This is also called
the open quadrant.
● The “open” quadrant represents things that both you know about yourself, and
that others know about you.
For example:
I know my name, and so do you, and if you have explored some of my websites,
you know some of my interests. The knowledge that the window represents, can
include not only factual information describing who I am.
When I first meet a new person, the size of the opening of this first quadrant
is not very large, since there has been little time to exchange information. As the
process of getting to know one another continues, the window shades move down
or to the right, placing more information into the open window as described below.
BLIND AREA
It is called blind spots because it speaks of the things/traits about you that are
considered as “UNKNOWN TO ME, BUT KNOWN TO OTHERS”.
The “blind” quadrant represents things that others know about you, but that you are
unaware of.
For example:
We could be eating at a restaurant, and I may have unknowingly gotten some food
on my face. This information is in my blind quadrant because you can see it, but I cannot. If
you now tell me that I have something on my face, then the window shades moves to the
right, enlarging the open quadrant’s area. Now, I may also have blinds spots with respect to
many other much more complex things. For example, perhaps in our ongoing conversation,
you may not want to embarrass me, or you may draw your own inferences that perhaps I am
being insincere. Then the problem is how can I get this information out in the open, since it
may be affecting the level of trust that is developing between us? How can I learn more
about myself? Unfortunately, there is no readily available answer I may notice a slight
hesitation on your part, and perhaps this may lead to a question. But who knows if I will pick
this up, or if your answer will be on the mark.
HIDDEN / PRIVATE AREA
● It is called private area because it speaks of the things/traits about you that are
considered as “KNOWN TO ME, BUT UNKNOWN TO OTHERS”.
● The “hidden” quadrant represents things that I know about myself that you do
not know.
For example:
I have not told you, nor mentioned anywhere on my website, what one
of my favorite ice cream flavor is. This information is in my “hidden” quadrant. As
soon as I tell you that I love “Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia” flavored ice cream. I am
effectively pulling the window shade down, moving the information in my hidden
quadrant and enlarging the open quadrant’s area. Again, there are vast amounts of
information, virtually my whole life’s story that has yet to be revealed to you. As we
got to know and trust each other, I will then feel more comfortable disclosing more
intimate details about myself. This process is called: “Self – disclosure”.
The 3rd window panel may be treated in two aspects:

•If they wish to put reveal their “known to me but unknown


to others” traits to their classmates then it will become part
of the revelation

•if they wish not to reveal their “knows to me but unknown


to others” traits to their classmates then it will become a
secret.
UNKNOWN / POTENTIAL AREA
● It is called potential area because it speaks of the things/traits about you that are considered as
“UNKNOWN TO ME AND UNKNOWN TO OTHERS”.
● The “unknown” quadrant represents things that neither I know about myself, nor you know about me.
For example:
I may disclose a dream that I had, and as we both attempt to understand its significance, a
new awareness may emerge, known to neither of us before the conversation took place. Being placed in
new situations often reveals new information not previously known to self or others.
For example, I learned of the Johari Window at a workshop, he created a safe atmosphere of care and trust
between the various participants. Usually, I am terrified of speaking in public, but I was surprised to learn
that is such an atmosphere, the task need not be so daunting. Prior to this event, I had viewed myself and
others had also viewed me as being extremely shy. (The above now reminds me of a funny joke, which I
cannot refrain from telling you. It is said that the number one fear that people have is speaking in public.
Their number two fear is dying. And the number three fear that people have, is dying while speaking in
public.) Thus, a novel situation can trigger new awareness and personal growth. The process of moving
previously unknown information into the open quadrant, thus enlarging its area, has been likened to
Maslow’s concept of self – actualization. The process can also be viewed as a game, where the open
quadrant is synonymous with the win-win situation.
The 4th window panel will be left empty. This will
become very symbolic because it will constantly
remind them of that area/traits in their lives that will
have to be discovered. This is referred to as the
potential area which will come to consciousness or
awareness as they continue to search for the question:

INSTRUCTIONS:

• The chosen symbol/painting must closely reflect on who you think you are
as a person.

• Painting can only be done in the following parts of the body such as: arm,
face and shoulder.

• The paintings must not show nudity, vulgar images and inappropriate
symbols.

• Be creative and resourceful. You can make use of paints, pens, markers,
highlighters, watercolors and etc.

FOR SUBMISSION:

• Take a picture of your body paint and paste in Microsoft word.

• Write a caption on why you chose that specific symbol or painting


and the materials used or how these symbols/paintings reflect the
person you think you are.

• Your caption must have a minimum of five (5) sentences.
