I
n early February of this year, the UK
government announced that plans for a bridge
between Northern Ireland and Scotland were
being looked into “by a range of government
officials.” Over recent years, Prime Minister,
Boris Johnson, has repeatedly sounded out the
idea of building a bridge connecting the islands of
Great Britain and Ireland, arguing that improving
transport links within the UK would bolster relations amid an ongoing divide
over the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.
Any major construction project comes with a host of practical, economic and
social challenges, and this project is no exception to the rule. The so-called
‘Boris Bridge’ would stretch across 22 miles of harsh, open sea, with water
depths of more than 1000 ft for a significant part of the route, and with at least
30 towers of 1400 ft in height required to provide clearance over the deepest
sections and the shipping channel. In total, the bridge would require 54 towers
of heights never previously achieved anywhere in the world.
And then there is the matter of Beaufort’s Dyke. This 32 mile-long depression
in the sea floor (which lies right across the proposed route) is home to the
UK’s largest offshore dump for conventional and chemical munitions. The
Ministry of Defence estimates that the total amount of conventional munitions
dumped in Beaufort’s Dyke is somewhere in the region of 1.2 million t. On top
of that, it is believed that the dyke also contains around 2 t of radioactive and
chemical weapons waste. Not exactly an ideal foundation.
Whilst it’s generally agreed that improving transport links between the
various islands of the UK would encourage economic growth, opponents
of the bridge also argue that £20 billion would be better spent elsewhere
– improving infrastructure in Northern Ireland, for example. Seamus Leheny,
Policy Manager for the Freight Transport Association of Northern Ireland,
was quoted by The Irish Times as comparing the bridge project to: “your
house having multiple leaks in the roof and thinking about building a new
conservatory.”
Another more down-to-earth, but equally controversial UK construction project is
‘High Speed 2’ or HS2, a high-speed rail link connecting London to Birmingham,
Manchester and Leeds, which was recently given the go-ahead after years
of delays and concerns over mounting costs. With a total cost of £106 billion
(enough for five Boris Bridges and some change), HS2 is slated for completion
in 2040. With up to 14 trains an hour and as many as 1100 seats per train, the
final capacity is expected to be triple what is currently available. Additionally,
the increased speed of the trains (up to 250 mph), will see commuting times
reduced significantly – by as much as an hour on certain routes. Matthew Fell,
Policy Director of the Confederation of British Industry, has stated that “The
project will bring jobs, new homes, skills and investment to the areas of the
country that need them most.” As with the bridge, much of the opposition to HS2
argues that the money would be better spent on improving local infrastructure.
That being said, with HS2 finally given the green signal and a government
willing to consider even rather controversial projects, the UK could be on the
verge of a period of major infrastructure development.

Argos implements technology to produce
Green Cement
An investment of more than US$78 million was made
at the Rioclaro Plant for the assembly of the new
production line, capable of producing 450 000 tpy
of calcined clay. With this investment, Argos, a
subsidiary of the Grupo Argos Business Group, has
begun to manufacture and distribute Green Cement.
In this process, the use of traditional clinker (base
material for cement) is reduced thanks to the
incorporation of calcined clays (artificial pozzolan).
This product makes it a more environmentally
friendly cement, since the carbon dioxide emissions
of the production process are reduced up to 38%
and energy consumption is reduced by 30%, in
comparison to the industry standard.
“With this project, we are leading the industry
and sowing the seeds of Argos for the future, which
today, starts a new production line in Rioclaro,
and which also has huge growth potential in all
geographies. This is not only from a product point
of view, but rather from a concrete action for the
sustainability of our industry. In our commitment to
climate change, this project clearly makes us very
proud,” said Juan Esteban Calle, Argos CEO.
This new line uses the latest technology in cement
manufacturing equipment and is unique to the global
industry. It allows Argos to have greater flexibility and
positions it as the first cement producer in Colombia
to offer its customers a portfolio of products, as well
as the possibility of customising cements according
to the needs and requirements of their projects.
Tomas Restrepo, Vice President of the Colombia
Region, said, “This new technological platform allows
us to dream of alternative businesses, and it not
only ratifies our commitment to sustainability, but it
also positions us at the forefront of innovation in the
industry because we are modifying the way cement
is traditionally produced. In regard to customers,
it has endless potential because we are the only
company in Colombia to have this equipment to
make customised products in accordance with the
demands of the projects and therefore, providing
outstanding solutions to our customers.”
During the assembly of the new Green Cement
manufacturing line, the company generated more than
600 jobs, of which 30% were local to the operation.
The Rioclaro Plant is located in the middle of
the country, which allows the organisation to serve
all markets from its central position and meet the

demands of the construction sector, both in the
infrastructure and civil sectors, as well as in housing
and commercial projects.
By having this new line of operation coming into
effect, plus the modern Cartagena Plant and other
facilities in the national geography, it places the
company as one with the largest installed capacity in
the country for the production of cement and concrete.
CEMEX-Tec Award celebrates 10th
anniversary
For the 10th year in a row, the
CEMEX-Tecnologico de Monterrey Centre for
Sustainable Development has launched its call for
the CEMEX-Tec Award around the globe.
The award recognises entrepreneurs and students
that develop high-impact proposals and projects
regarding sustainable development, innovation, and
social entrepreneurship. This award offers funding,
specialised workshops, and networking moments.
“This year, we celebrate 10 years of the
CEMEX-Tec Award, and we are also 10 years away
from achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
of the UN. Through this award, we continue to
recognise and collaborate with agents of change
who are also working towards the same goals
of the 2030 Agenda,” said Martha Herrera,

HeidelbergCement experiences good
revenue and results growth in 2019
Group revenue for the whole of 2019 increased
by 4.3% to €18.9 billion (previous year: 18.1)
compared to the previous year. Excluding
consolidation and exchange rate effects, it grew
by 2.1%. Positive revenues in the core activities
cement, aggregates, and ready-mixed concrete
were offset by lower revenue in the company’s
trading business – caused especially by the
trading of fuels that has been reduced in the
fourth quarter of 2019.
Results from current operations before
depreciation increased by 15.5% to €3580 million
(previous year: 3100). Like-for-like, the rise
amounted to 2.5%. The result from current
operations increased by 8.8% to €2186 million
(previous year: 2010). Like-for-like, it rose by
4.7%.
All group areas contributed to the growth
of results from current operations before
depreciation. Western and Southern Europe
recorded the highest rise, followed by Asia-Pacific
and Northern and Eastern Europe-Central Asia.
Results in North America and in the Group
area Africa-Eastern Mediterranean Basin also
developed positively.
In the fourth quarter 2019 results of the group
areas were characterised by various dynamics.
In North America, business in the US developed
positively, while results in Western Canada
declined. Results in Western and Southern
Europe were impaired by the strong comparable
basis of the previous year’s quarter as well as
market-related temporary effects in the UK,
Belgium/Netherlands, and France.
In the group area Northern
and Eastern Europe-Central Asia, especially
the eastern European countries, contributed to
the results growth. In Asia-Pacific, good results
in Indonesia and Thailand more than offset the
weaker development in Australia.
Recovery in the group area Africa-Eastern
Mediterranean Basin continued in the fourth
quarter.

T
he cement industry plays an important
role in national development
and provides a large number of
employment opportunities for the
people of Pakistan. Various studies have
illustrated that the growth of the cement
industry has the highest correlation with overall
GDP growth, in large part because cement is
essential to the construction of infrastructure,
such as bridges and roads. Commercial,
residential and industrial construction is
growing rapidly in Pakistan. Geographically,
the cement industry of Pakistan is split into
two regions, North (including the provinces of
KPK, Punjab, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan
and some parts of Balochistan) and South
(including the provinces of Sindh and
Balochistan).

In wake of the China Pakistan Economic
Corridor (CPEC), the cement industry of
Pakistan has received a significant boost.
Currently, the industry is well poised to utilise
enhanced production capacities, built up with
this momentum in mind, and is exploring major
international markets including Sri Lanka,
the Middle East, the ASEAN countries,
Yemen, Sudan, Ethiopia, Algeria and parts of
North Africa.
According to APCMA, Pakistan exported
6.54 million t of cement in FY 2018 – 19,
whereas in FY 19 – 20, 5.19 million t was
exported in the first seven months. This rise in
exports is also mainly because of the focus on
the sale of clinker, a product one step away
from the finished product of cement.
The current operational capacity of Pakistan
is around 64.5 million tpy and is expected to
increase to 76 million tpy in 2020.

Equipment and modernisation
Lucky Cement is the first and only cement
company to own a state of-the-art export
terminal at Karachi Port. These cement silos
have the capacity to store 24 000 t of cement.
The company also operates a fleet of specially
designed cement bulkers that effectively transport
loose cement. These bulkers are equipped
with a unique compression system and are
capable of carrying varying quantities of cement.
Lucky Cement is also the first cement company
to use hydraulic tipping trailers in its logistics
fleet to transport raw material to the plant and
to export clinker. These mechanised trailers add
significant efficiencies, reduce turnaround time
and minimise operational costs.
Advanced quality control systems help
ensure product dependability, quality, and
customer satisfaction. The company focuses on
manufacturing premium quality cement through
highly advanced quality control systems equipped
with the latest technology including DCS, PLCs
and X-Ray analysers.
Lucky Cement has proven to be a
market leader in the industry with its
implementation of SAP S/4 HANA processes.
Phase 1 of Project ASPIRE has already been
implemented throughout the organisation.

IT-driven operational framework, the company

Safety and sustainability
Lucky Cement has a dedicated HSE department
to provide an effective system of measuring,
monitoring and reporting of necessary

matters. The HSE department at Lucky Cement
is involved in environmental protection, safety
at work, occupational health and safety,
compliance and following best practices. The
core aims are to prevent and reduce accidents,
overcome emergencies and health issues at
work and to protect the environment.
Implementation of environment-friendly
operations has always been a priority of
Lucky Cement. The company has been
successful in establishing a leadership position
in the market by achieving this target through

One example of progress in this field is
development of a dual-fuel conversion project,
which has seen the company move energy
generation away from furnace oil and towards
environmentally-friendly alternatives.
The company also makes use of waste heat
recovery (WHR) plants. The WHR plants
consume no fuel, lower dust emissions, and
reduce discharged heat, thus having a positive
impact on the environment. The company has five
WHR plants: three in Pezu and two in Karachi.
The cumulative generation capacity of three
Plants in Pezu is 25.20 MW and the cumulative
capacity of the two in Karachi is 20.5 MW.
Lucky Cement has a comprehensive air quality
measurement programme, designed to identify
the limits of pollution parameters in the ambient
air in and around the company’s plants. Stack
emissions monitoring is carried out on a monthly
basis for the priority parameters in compliance
with the requirements of NEQS (self-monitoring
and reporting) rules, 2001.
The levels of particulate matter, SO2, NOx,
and CO are monitored from the stacks of power
generation engines by a reputable third-party
laboratory.
