OSMOSIS IN LIVING RBCS
1. Describe how the RBC shape changes when placed in each solution.
• 0.9% saline solution
- Isotonic, biconcave disk

• 10% saline solution

- crenate, hypertonic

• distilled water
- hypotonic, swell

2. Describe how extracellular solute concentration affects osmosis across the plasma
membrane.
- From a lesser solute concentration to a higher solute concentration, water diffuses.

3. Describe how water movement affects the cell shape.

- The more water there is in the cell, the larger it becomes.

4. State which solution(s) caused osmosis in RBCs.

- A blood cell placed in a hypotonic solution would absorb water as water would
osmotically enter cells from the bordering hypertonic solution medium, causing the
cell to swell.

OSMOSIS IN POTATO
1. Describe what changes happened when the potato was placed in each solution.
• 0.9% saline solution
- The potato cell will remain unchanged, as there will be no discernible change.
• 10% saline solution
- The potato cell loses water, shrinks in size, and becomes flaccid.

• distilled water
- When the potato is placed in distilled water, it absorbs the water.

2. Was there a change in the shape of the cells of the Potato? Explain your answer.
- If the salt concentration in the cup is greater than that in the potato cells, water will
flow from the potato into the cup. This causes the potato cells to shrink, which is
why the potato strips' length and diameter decrease.
