SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

1. What are the challenges faced by Philippine Airlines based on the article?

The flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) is facing a debt mounts. Major issues of
PAL is “Total Operation Cost” which is the flag carrier reduce leasing costs by at
least $1 billion and cut some jobs. PAL is planning to seek court protection from
creditors and one of the reasons why PAL is experiencing bankrupt is due to
continuing rising COVID-19 cases and strict entry protocols.

2. What possible solution/s can you suggest to solve the identified

challenges, assuming you are part of PAL’s management.

The best solution I can suggest is to stop the international flights for now because in
the past years as the pandemic starts international flights seem a bit off the
chart. As the demand of international flights dropped to 75.6 percent, which is a
big lost to the company. Instead, why don't we concentrate on domestic flights?
Basically the demand of the domestic flights dropped to 48.8 percent which is
not too high unlike the international flight. Most of our employees has been cut
due to this pandemic, our maximum labor for a company depends on what the
IATA required. And as of now a bit our airports are now operating and most of its
flights are only domestic flights. I suggest temporarily stop the international
flights and focus on the domestic flights as of now. A solution can suggest to total
operating cost is ensure that our airlines has insurance for employees,
passengers, and system of our plane, negotiate airport fees for the benefit of
passengers to have cheap fare, and the other fees that the consumer, passenger,
and also the company airline will benefit and pay for it. Another thing is we
should try our best to adopt to the situation and if we can adopt, we can survive
this pandemic and economic problem.

3. How will you encourage Filipinos to book flights and travel again despite the
issues in the airline industry, especially during a health crisis?

 The airline industry is one of the most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. During
the pandemic most of the people are not allowed to travel and it effected the
tourism industry. The negative impact of the Covid-19 is that a lot of tourism jobs
were put at risk. But on the bright side, the destinations were able to rest
because less people were able to be involved in nature. The local community
were able to protect, sustain, boost and innovate their community.
During health crisis, Philippines gradually lift domestic travel restrictions and
making sure to follow health protocols. As the new normal come through today,
using the digital media I will promote, encourage and ensure my fellow Filipinos
to travel safe again. Tourism establishments today had adopted the new normal
where in transactions are contact less and cashless. Tourism and hospitality
industry’s main concern is each other’s health and safety, in this way we, tourism
and hospitality management, should encourage, transparent and build the
travelers trust and confidence for a new normal and safe traveling.

4. How can airline companies, such as Philippine Airlines, ensure the safety of their
passengers during a flight in the time of a health crisis (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic?

 The airlines companies set a standard and guidelines to ensure the safety of their
passengers during flight in the time of health crisis. In plane all cabin crews are
required to wear face masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) through
this they can protect themselves and the passengers as well. Some airlines don’t
serve meals in trays they will provide a food package box/pre-packed in flight
which includes drinks and snacks. In this protocols airlines can ensure the safety
of passengers and employees during health crisis.
