Symbols Description
Caution
Follow these instructions to avoid damages to the unit or injuries of
CAUTION personnel.
Dangerous Voltage
Follow these instructions to avoid situations which cause severe or
DANGER deadly injuries due to dangerous electrical voltage.
Note
Note:
Note text Please observe these notes.
1. Operation steps
2. Complete the operation described respectively (multiple steps are
3. numbered, arrow indicates a single step).
Dangerous Voltage
Risk of death due to short circuits and electric shock if the active filter is
DANGER opened while connected to the ac mains or for up to 30 minutes after
being disconnected from the ac mains
All interventions involving opening the device cover or removing or
installing the connection cable may only be performed by qualified
personnel.
Make absolutely sure that the filter is grounded. Good grounding is
required to prevent any risk from leakage current.
Do not set up the filter near liquids.
Do not expose the filter to excessive humidity.
Remove or open the covers/doors only if the power is switched off.
CAUTION Contaminants such as oils, liquids, corrosive vapors, abrasive debris, dust and
aggressive gases must be kept out of the filter enclosure.
WARNING: Conductive dust may cause damage to AHF. Ensure that installation
site of AHF is free of conductive dust.
The ac mains current, disturbed by a non-linear load, is measured by the active Filter either directly or
indirectly via external current transformers. The harmonic content and reactive power components are
detected and processed in a digital control structure.
The active filter continually generates a compensating current that compensates the harmonic content
and reactive current in the load, so the ac mains only has to provide only the active fundamental phase
current as is shown in Fig. 2.1.
As shown in Fig 2.2, EPCOS AHF adopts 3-level topological structure, and each phase leg consists of
four bidirectional switches and two clamping diodes. Take phase-A leg as example, when Tu1, Tu2 is
on and Tu3, Tu4 is off, the voltage between point A and point O (VAO) is Vd/2; when Tu2, Tu3 is on
and Tu1, Tu4 is off, point A is connected to point O, so VAO is equal to 0; when Tu3, Tu4 is on and
Tu1, Tu2 is off, VAO is equal to -Vd/2.
Therefore, each phase leg can output three states of voltage level. The output terminal of each phase
leg is connected to the power grid through inductor, which continuously charge and discharge to
compensate harmonic under the combined influence from tri-level inverter and grid voltage.

The PQSineTM S-Series active harmonic filter is used for Harmonic compensation, reactive power
compensation and load balancing. No other use is allowed. Ensure that you are using the right AHF
system for your application. Due to the difference of installation environment for each user, do read the
guide carefully before installation. The installation, assembly and starting up must be conducted by
qualified professional personnel. When stacking machine or other tools are used to transport the unit,
make sure whether its load-bearing capacity is enough. Check the weight of AHF in Table 2.1 and
Before proceeding with the installation, make sure that the power input terminals are disconnected.
Good grounding must be ensured to avoid any damage from leakage current. Maintain good and
effective grounding for AHF system. Provide the means to isolate any faulty units / modules in the
system in case of any accident. Please ensure that no power factor compensation systems, which are
not (de-tuned), are connected to the same grid. Confirm the cable mark of power input terminal and the
cable mark of external CT and make sure the size of wire, diameter and phase order of input power are
correct. Refer to Selection of Cable and Accessories page 97 for the input cable specification.
EPCOS 50A AHF can be classified into LED, 3-phase 3-wire & 3-phase 4-wire system, and rack-
mounted & wall-mounted. The LED module contains at its front panel two LED indicators at its front
panel and they are monitored and debugged in different ways. Because their chassis are almost of the
same-size, we only introduce the installation and electrical connection of one of the LED model of the
same capacity level.
As shown in Fig 3.1, rack-mounted module is fixed in the cabinet. The fixed hole for installation of a
single module is marked and the wall-mounted model is fixed on hardened wall or directly in the cabinet,
and the fixed size and fixed hole site for installation are marked in Fig 3.2.

Network interface and dry contact interface are listed in Fig 3.8. Dry contact interface contain two input
and two output channels. EPCOS AHF only defines the first channel of output. User may self-define
the second channel of output and two input channels to expand the function, e.g. display status
information or alarm information. Such board is not installed on our standard AHF. Customers may
order the board separately if they need it. Definition of network interface and dry contact interface is
listed in Table 3.3. This dry contact interface is only inbuilt in certain module ratings, for other this dry
contact needs to be installed additionally as an external unit.
The wall mounted modules comes with a fitted 4.3 inch LCD display on all individual units. So each
modules has got a display in order to feed the settings. The individual wall mounted capacity is entered
in the respective LCD display and the CT is connected in series between the individual wall mounted
units. The electrical interconnection of parallel wall mounted units are illustrated in Fig 3.9.
All modules for parallel operation are installed according to site condition.
In case of single module system, the CT location can be set up “Load” or “Grid”. For multi
module system, CT location can only be entered as load side. In case if the CTs can only be
physically connected at the grid side, a second set of CTs need to be connected in the AHF path
to calculate the effective load current and the settings should be entered as “Load” in the
display. In parallel operation, the power cables of all wall mounted units are connected exactly the
same way as that in single module system. Note the mode of connection of signal interface. The front
board of wall mounted module contains LCD monitor, each 4.3-inch screen monitoring and debugging
the operating state of local device. As 7-inch monitor is not used, there is no need to number every wall
mounted units (namely no need to set dial switch for every wall mounted units / rack mounted modules).
Thus, it is enough to connect CT signal interface in parallel operation instead of connecting 485+, 485-
, EPO_A and GND_ISO of all modules with each other. It is recommended that series mode be adopted
for connection of CT signal interface among all wall mounted units, as shown in Fig 3.10. Contact
EPCOS product engineer for details if you decide to adopt parallel mode for connection of CT signal
interface as shown in Fig 3.11 .
When CT signal interface needs to be connected in parallel, the cable length from external CT interface
to all single modules should be the exactly the same to achieve the effect of current sharing. Generally,
the parallel cable should be shorter than 15m. If the selected cable is longer than 30m, specific solution
should be provided (e.g. strengthen the effect of shielding or adopt cable with lower electrical resistivity).
Contact EPCOS product engineer in advance for parallel cable longer than 30m.

The rule adopted in parallel operation of EPCOS 050A AHF can be applied to all other wall mounted
AHF units. Refer the schematic structure in Fig 3.9. It is only required to connect CT signal interface in
parallel operation instead of connecting 485+, 485-, EPO_A and GND_ISO of all modules. We
recommend that series connection be adopted for CT signal interface. The mark on the back board of
chassis should be noted. The direction for the power terminal of EPCOS 150A AHF is A, B, C and N
from left to right, while the direction for wall mounted units of other capacity levels is N, C, B and A from
left to right.
3.4.3 Electrical Interconnection of wall mounted modules of different capacity
To cope with different work environments and satisfy different requirements for harmonic suppression,
user may combine wall mounted modules of different capacity levels in parallel. For example, EPCOS
025A AHF and EPCOS 050A AHF can be combined to compensate harmonic and output maximum
current of 75A.
When combining EPCOS 25A AHF and EPCOS 50A AHF, you may refer to section 3.3 (key information
about electrical connection of single unit) to know the electrical connection of their power terminals.
There is no need to connect 485+, 485-, EPO_A and GND_ISO of these two modules to each other
and series connection is adopted among CT signal interfaces. As shown in Fig 3.12, CT_A_GND of
25A AHF and CT_A of 50A AHF are connected, then CT_A of 25A AHF, CT_A_GND of 50A AHF
connected separately to S1 and S2 of external CT. The same way of connection must be applied
between CT_B, CT_B_GND, CT_C and CT_C_GND of 25A AHF and CT_B, CT_B_GND, CT_C and
CT_C_GND of 50A AHF.

Besides, EPCOS AHF cabinet can be independently used, namely no need to combine cabinet
(independent cabinet recommended, more convenient). EPCOS provides standard cabinets with three
sizes: 600 (W) x 1000 (D) x 2200 (H), 800 (W) x 1000 (D) x 2200 (H) and 800 (W) x 800 (D) x 2200 (H).
User may design cabinet according to his own need.
AHF 400V /600 A FM -4W 10: Single AHF cabinet with full capacity of 600A, used in 3-phase 4-wire
system of 400V, with centralized monitor, upper inlet wire, used independently (namely no combined
cabinet).
3.5.2 Electrical interconnection of a rack mounted module (eg EPCOS 050A AHF)
Take three parallel modules of EPCOS 50A AHF as example. As shown in Fig 3.14, the dial switch of
module 1 is set as CT2=CT1=CT0=0, dial switch of module 2 set as CT2=CT1=0, CT0=1, and dial
switch of module 3 set as CT2= 0, CT=1 and CT0=0. Refer Table 3.2 in Page 44
Series connection is adopted among module CT signal interfaces. Please refer Fig 3.14 for connection
details.
CT_A_GND, CT_B_GND and CT_C_GND of module 1 are separately connected to CT_A, CT_B and
CT_C of module 2.
CT_A_GND, CT_B_GND and CT_C_GND of module 2 are connected to CT_A, CT_B and CT_C of
module 3,
tCT_A of module 1 connected to S1 of external TAa (used as phase-A CT), CT_A_GND of module 3
connected to S2 of external TAa.
The same rule applied to TAb (used as phase-B CT) and TAc (used as phase-C CT).
Fig 3.15 shows one of the user terminals. For actual wiring of cabinet system, the interfaces of external
TAa, Tab and TAc are connected to one side of user terminal row, the other side of user terminal row
connected to CT_A, CT_B and CT_C of module 1 and CT_A_GND, CT_B_GND and CT_C_GND of
module 3.
485+, 485-, EPO_A and GND_ISO of module 1 are connected in parallel with 485+, 485-, EPO_A and
GND_ISO of module 2.
485+, 485-, EPO_A and GND_ISO of module 2 are connected in parallel with 485+, 485-, EPO_A and
GND_ISO of module 3.
In the rack mounted cabinet system, two 120-Ohm resistances are required, one put between 485+ and
485- of the first module and the other between 485+ and 485- of the last module.
Here, when three modules are in parallel connection, operation needs to be done to module 1 and 3.
The monitoring and debugging of centralized monitor to the three modules in parallel can be realized
when communication interface of 7-inch monitor is connected to the monitoring interface of module 1.
The same principle can be applied to parallel operation for any multi module system as indicated in Fig
3.16. The above-mentioned multi-device combination can be applied to the following modules: EPCOS

Similarly TAa: S2, Tab: S2 and TAc: S2 represent interface S2 of CT.
The connection diagram of signal interface given in this guide is just
schematic diagram of the actual wiring
As one of external components of AHF, current transformer (CT) plays a key role in the normal operation
of AHF, so the selection of external CT is extremely important. In 3-phase 3-wire system, two CTs are
required, each installed on phase A and phase C, while in 3-phase 4-wire system three CTs are required
and each installed on phase A, phase B and phase C.
In AHF module, the minimum allowable ratio of external CT is 150:5, maximum is 10000:5. Ratio
can be selected between the two levels in accordance with actual load current. When selecting CT ratio,
the actual magnitude of load current should be taken into consideration so as to obtain more accurate
compensation.
Generally, a CT primary side ratio selection of 1.5 times of the maximum current during operation is
mandatory, and an appropriate level of margin is recommended to ensure more accurate harmonic
suppression. CT primary side ratio of more than 4 times the system current is not recommended.
Suppose the maximum of load current detected is 1000A, the best selection of CT primary current ratio
is between 1500:5~2000:5. The accuracy of external CT should be better than level 0.2 for
connection at the supply side (closed loop system) or better than level 0.5 for CT connection at
the load side (open loop system). Lower degree of accuracy may affect the compensation accuracy.
The CT cable used below a length of 15m is RVVSP 2*2.5 mm2. and between 15m-30m is RVVSP
2*4 mm2. For distance above 30m, please contact EPCOS. It is recommended to use twisted pair cable
and do not install in parallel with power cable in order to avoid EMI (Electromagnetic Interference).
CT can be installed in open or closed loop configuration. Open loop CT is more convenient to install.
Closed loop CT can be installed when the customer is having a power shutdown or by using split core
CTs. When selecting CT, customer needs to note CT ratio must be within the range mentioned in the
paragraph above. Before starting the device, customer must confirm if the “CT Ratio” setup in the
interface of monitor is identical with actual CT ratio .
CT can be installed at load side (most recommended), or source side. Refer to the following information
for details.
Fig 3.20 Wiring of CT installed at load side with large capacitance at source side
Fig 3.21 Wiring of CT installed at source side for one module/ wall mounted
If there is a multi-module cabinet, for the source side CT installation, the user need to connect an
additional CT ( exactly identical to the CT connected at the source side ) in the AHF Path. The details
for this connection is shown in the Fig 3.22.
If it is not convenient for user to install CT at load side, it is required to adopt an equivalent method to
collect load current. We know from Kirchhoff's current law that the current flowing into circuit node at
any moment is equivalent to the current flowing out of this node. So, the same effect can be achieved
when CT is installed at source side. When CT is installed at source side for multi module units, user at
least needs to use two sets of CTs (4CTs, in 3-phase 3-wire system & 6CTs, in 3-phase 4-wire system).
Two groups of CTs are installed on phase cable at source side and power cable at AHF side and are
connected in parallel. In this case with the help of 2 sets of CTs since we are calculating the effective
load current, in the settings you should enter the CT location as ‘load side’ even though the main CT is
physically on the grid side.
The direction of CT terminals is really important and it should be followed exactly as shown in
the following diagrams. In all the following installations with multiple CTs the direction of CTs
are marked in such a way that the effective feedback to the AHF is the sum of the multiple CTs
connected . For eg if there are 2 sets of CTs, one set in Grid side and one set in AHF path then
S1 CT1 +S1 CT2 must be connected to the respective phase of S1 AHF
S2 CT1 +S2 CT2 must be connected to the respective phase of S2 AHF
The same strategy should be followed for all installations with multiple sets of CTs, provided
the direction of CT installation shown in the respective figures is followed.

Fig 3.25 Wiring of CT installed at source side with capacitance at load side for multi-module
Fig 3.26 Wiring of CT under double bus power supply single AHF module
Fig 3.27 Wiring of CT under double bus power supply for multi AHF modules
NOTE:
1. If multi-group CTs in parallel CTs (more than one group) are required, it
must be ensured all CTs are identical.
CAUTION 2. When external CT is installed to detect load current, if multi-group CTs are
required, their interfaces should be connected in parallel manner.
The CT wiring between the parallel connected rack mounted/ wall mounted
units must be connected in either series or parallel. However we recommend
to connect CT wiring between the parallel connected modules to be
completed in series as shown in Fig 3.16
4 System Operation
4.1 Monitoring and debugging of Wall mounted (4.3 inch)
units
4.1.1 4.3-inch LCD screen
The 4.3-inch screen at the front board of LCD models allows it to display information about voltage and
current on a real-time basis. It’s convenient to check the power state and to set the parameters of the
machine. This chapter mainly introduces the information and all parameters displayed by LCD, and the
operation and control through LCD man-machine interface.
LCD module has friendly operation interface and provides 4.3-inch colorful graphic display. User can
carry out all operating commands by means of clicking on the display interface, conveniently browsing
relevant parameter and waveform of grid side, output side and load side, and timely obtaining the
current status and alarm information of AHF. Inquiry of history alarm information is also available,
providing reliable evidence for troubleshooting. LCD can also display version information about system-
controlled software and internal monitoring software.
LCD display interface includes “power on”, “main”, “parameter setting”, “monitor parameter” and
“record”. After connection to power supply, AHF enters the startup interface first.
After “Power ON”, you’ll enter the main interface (interface of AHF already in normal operation with
output compensation current). As shown in Fig 4.1, the main interface displays the THD and RMS of all
phases at grid side and load side. Besides, it also contains buttons “Data”, “Settings”, “Record”,
“Power On” and “Power Off”.

three-phase imbalance compensation (B). However, EPCOS AHF provides different “Operation
Modes”: Harmonics Comp; H+Q; H+Q+B; Auto-ageing (not applicable to customer, only used before
AHF leaving factory); H+B+Q; H+B; Q+H; Q+H+B; Q+B+H; B+H; B+H+Q; B+Q+H; Constant Q. The
sequence of operation modes when selecting the combination of more than one operation modes
should be according to the priority of compensation.
Different function combinations represent different significances and have different priorities, e.g. the
combination of H+Q+B means preferential compensation of harmonic, then reactive power, and three-
phase imbalance; H+B+Q means preferential compensation of harmonic, then three-phase imbalance,
and reactive power; mode 0 means sole compensation of harmonic, Q+H means preferential
compensation of reactive power, and then harmonic compensation.

7 Appendix
7.1 Introduction of Modbus Protocol
Due to the large number and great intensity of interference sources during electric power
communication, RS485 is more reliable and stable than RS232 communication. While in RS485,
Modbus protocol communication only needs to use RX and TX of serial port. Thus, Modbus RTU is
adopted for transmission.
EPCOS AHF supports Modbus protocol. EPCOS AHF contains RS485 communication interface
and can be connected to external USB or serial port via 485/USB converter or 485/232 converter. For
wall mounted unit with 4.3 inch display, it needs to be connected to external USB interface or serial port
via signal interfaces 485P+ and 485P- behind the chassis, as shown in Fig 7.1 and Fig 7.2. For LED
model, it needs to be connected to external USB interface or serial port via signal interfaces 485+ and
485- of centralized monitoring modules, as shown in Fig 7.3 and Fig 7.4. Modbus bus can be applied
to the collection and process monitoring of all kinds of data via Modbus protocol, user can collect and
check voltage information, current information, power information, harmonic analysis, IO status and
temperature information, and collect the alarm information of AHF.
Remark: user needs to contact EPCOS product engineer if MODBUS protocol is required.
