10. (a)Which is more advantages : to pay wages according to the amount of work done or according to
power? What are the units of power larger that watt? A machine with a velocity ratio of 8 requires
1000J of work to raise a load of 400 N through a vertical distance of 2 m. Find the efficiency and

(b)Define (i) the density of a substance (ii) atmospheric pressure. Where and why does nose bleeding
occur? The weight of a block of unknown volume is 10 N. The apparent weight is only 8 N when it is
immersed in water. Find the density of the block. (16marks)
11. (a)Define heat conduction. How does a blanket wrapped round your body keep you warm on a cold day.
A person walking generates heat at the rate of 0.07 W. If the surface area of the body is 1.5m2 and heat
is to be generated 3 cm below the skin, find the temperature difference between the skin and interior of
the body if the heat is to be conducted through the skin? (K = 5 x 10-5 Wm-1K-1)
