2. Explain the importance of protein synthesis?
Guide Questions
Guide Questions:
1. Does a DNA mutation always change the protein? Why or why not?
2. What is a stop codon and what does it "stop" from happening?
3. In addition to substitution mutation, in what other ways can a DNA nucleotide sequence
mutate?
1. How is the change in the protein in red blood cell affect the function of the cell?
2. How can mutation effect the organism?
3. Is mutation good or bad?
Generalization:
Diabetes is a disease characterized by the inability to break down sugars. Often a person with diabetes
has a defective DNA sequence that codes for the making of the insulin protein. This mutation is called
a POINT MUTATION because only one base is affected. When the amino acid in a sequence has been
changed, the shape of the protein changes and can become less functional (or not function at
all.) Suppose a person has a mutation in their DNA, and the first triplet for the gene coding for insulin is
T A T (instead of C C A).
1. Determine what amino acid the new DNA triplet codes for.
2. Will this person be diabetic? Explain
