CHILE
EARTHQUAKE
INTERNATIONAL
CHILE EARTHQUAKE
EPICENTER : 200 MILES OFF THE COAST OF
SOUTHWEST OF SANTIAGO, CHILE
MAGNITUDE : 8.8
INTENSITY : IX
DATE : FEBRUARY 27, 2010
OTHER SIGNIFICANT INFO :
CHILE IS PART OF THE PACIFIC RING OF FIRE.
THE DEATH TOLL WAS AROUND 799 AND
AROUND 2 MILLION WERE OVERALL AFFECTED BY
THE EARTHQUAKE.
A 30 DAY CURFEW WAS IMPOSED TO THE
RESIDENTS OF THE MOST AFFECTED AREAS,
WHICH WERE MAULE ND BIO-BIO.
GROUND SHAKING
The ground shaking lasted for 4 MINUTES.
Vertical and horizontal deformations
It was felt in six Chilean regions (80% of
the country's population)
Mega thrust-faulting type earthquake
STRUCTURE HAZARDS
Earthquake shaking caused extensive damage to many
non-engineered and engineered buildings throughout the
area
- Fires
- Buckling of longitudinal reinforcement
- Partial story collapses and toppled structures
- Collapsed bridges
LIQUEFACTION
Liquefaction sites extends near to 1000 km, which
is twice the length of the rupture.
High seismic regions present stratified sandy
soils, since liquefaction must have occurred in the
past.
LANDSLIDES
A majority of landslides occurred in the youngest
geologic units.
In total, 1226 landslides were mapped over a total area
of c. 120,500 km2, dominantly disrupted slides.
LIFELINE HAZARDS
Electrical Power and Telecommunication:
Chile's topography became a hindrance in
transmission of electricity and network.
Water Facilities:
Damage to various water system in Concepcion and
Talcahauno.

Gas and Oil:

In Bio-Bio Chile refinery, the refractor in the heaters
fell to the heater floor which caused the failure
TSUNAMI
The Tsunami from this earthquake took 156 lives
out of the 521 deaths.
The Tsunami was recorded at over 150 locations,
triggering Tsunami alerts in 54 Countries.

EARTHQUAKE
LOCAL
CASIGURAN EARTHQUAKE
EPICENTER : CASIGURAN, AURORA
MAGNITUDE : 7.3
INTENSITY : VIII - MERCALLI
DATE : AUGUST 02, 1968
TIME: 4:19AM
OTHER SIGNIFICANT INFO :
CONSIDERED THE MOST SEVERE AND
DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKE EXPERIENCED IN
THE PHILIPPINES DURING THE LAST 20
YEARS.
TRIGGERING FACTOR IN
INSTITUTIONALIZING THE NATIONAL
STRUCTURAL CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES
GROUND SHAKING
Strong ground shaking produced extensive damage of
properties from Casiguran Aurora to Metro Manila.
70% of Luzon Island felt the Earthquake.
Extensive damage was recorded in Casiguran but
structural damages were worst in different parts of
Metro Manila.
STRUCTURAL HAZARDS
A six-storey building in Binondo, (Ruby Tower) Manila
collapsed instantly during the quake which sustained the
severe levels of structural damage
The cost of property damage was several million dollars.
Earthquake casualty were 270 deaths and 261 injured.
NATIONAL BUILDING CODE

RUBY TOWER CASE

LIQUEFACTION
Cracks on mostly loose deltaic sand that were
parallel to the river of Casiguran were observed.
Fissures on the road from Casiguran to Barrio
Tabas produced a 0.5 meters crack and the
surface subsidence varied to as much as two
meters.
The length of the fissures varies from 10 to 500
meters. Lateral spreading happed as a result of
the earthquake
LANDSLIDES
The largest landslide took place on the cliff
at Dinajawan Point facing Casiguran Bay
Landslide also occurred on the bank of
Manglad river, a tributary of Cagayan River
LIFELINE HAZARDS
Transportation:
Roads beside the Cagayan River was severely
damaged by the liquefaction damaged and
was not used for months.
Casiguran Bridge was moved because of the
strong earthquake
TSUNAMI
Tsunami was
observed and recorded as
far as observation

in tide gauge station in
Japan.

Depth approximately 31 km from the

surface.
