Unit 1 : Mathematics in our World

Using your cellphone, take a picture of three things that you see around exhibiting
patterns. Discuss the pattern of the pictures that you have taken and how these relate to
Mathematics.

1) BUTTERFLY’S WINGS

- Butterfly’s wings have symmetrical patterns. And looking at the beautiful patterns of
a butterfly’s wings is the first step at understanding the concepts of calculus (even vs odd
functions), linear algebra, abstract algebra (symmetric group), statistics and of course, the
concept of symmetry.
2) VEINS OF A LEAF

- The pattern of veins of a leaf is called the fractal pattern. Fractals are not only a series
of lines but also any shape or object that repeats. The shape is made of smaller version of itself,
breaking apart into smaller and smaller versions of the same shape. The fractal pattern found
in a leaf is actually related to Mathematics. Mathematical physicists at Rockfeller University
used fluorescent dye and time lapse photography to digitally study microscopic patterns within
these vascular networks or veins in order to better understand how nutrients flow through the
leaf and into the plant’s cells. He said that the leaves can be scanned at extremely high
resolution and reconstruct every single little piece of vein – who talks to who, who is connected
to who, and what are the diameters and so forth. Science correspondent Miles O’Brien added
that understanding these veins can hold potential applications for other systems that branch and
rejoin, from river deltas to neural networks, even malignant tumors.
3) SOAP FILMS

- The Belgian Physicist Joseph Plateau formulated the mathematical problem of the
existence of a minimal surface with a given boundary, which is now named after him. He
studied soap films intensively and formulated Plateau’s laws, which describe the structures
formed by films in foams.
