THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Social media such as Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok is a

innovation to encourage social cooperation between an enormous gathering

of individuals through organization. In like manner broadly utilized

organization is the Internet. However, online media stages are likewise for

nearby organizations as well. Social media has changed the world from

multiple points of view. It influences every person in an unexpected way.

Today it tends to be utilized as an extremely accommodating instrument in

changing an individual's life, and yet cause such clashes which can

adversely affect a person. The presence and force of media impacts

Facebook, YouTube and the TikTok are progressively perceived as a

significant part of the social biology of kids and youth, and these impacts

have gotten more noticeable and unpredictable in ongoing many years.

Exploration that investigates the level and impacts of media impacts calls for

estimations of the amount and character of openness to an assortment of

possibly covering media sources, an investigation of the substance of the

media yield, and assessment of the social setting and connections that are

related with the media experience.

Background of the study

Advancement in technologies particularly the Internet have made

compelling changes in how people interact, learn, communicate, and build

knowledge, but “Can the usage of social media enhance or destruct the

study habits of teenagers?” Analyzing the given information can give proofs

and assumptions whether this is true. The use of social media applications

has become a widespread phenomenon among all age groups (Perpetua O.

Ezeji, Kelechi E. Ezeji). According to the researcher’s knowledge from their

gathered studies and literature most of them show that the usage of social

media destructs a student’s capability into studying more. The gathered data

and as well as most people do believe that the usage of social media is not

good for a student since the effect is not being able to focus on their study.

This however it contradicts to studies and news that the researchers also

gathered to prove that the problem is not applicable to all since it does show

that when students mostly likely teenagers use social media because they

learn more from the sites. These are the factors in how it social media

destructs study habits. The reason why people also come to think that the

use of SNS is bad for studies is because it leads to “Last-minute cramming

time management study strategy” (Andrea Bikerdike, Conall O’

Deasmhunaigh, Siun O’Flynn, and Colm O’ Tuathaigh). Aside from

cramming it also shows evident effect that “Studies have also revealed that

the use of social media can affect students’ use of English. They tend to use

short-handwriting to chat with friends and get used to it thereby replicating

the same errors during examinations.” (Bernard John Kolan, Patience

Emefa Dzandza). Social media does not only destruct studies, but it is also

underestimated by a lot of people. These factors are how using social media

enhance study habits of teenagers. This helps students to collaborate on a

common effort and build relationship. Social media as a group of internet-

based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundation

it allows to share creation and exchange of user-generated content. It

enhances communication building; critical thinking and sharing of knowledge

worldwide. (Olutola, Adekunle Thomas (Ph.D.), Olatoye, Olufunke Omotoke,

Olatoye, Rafiu Ademola (Ph.D.). The use of social media brings out the

following skills of students in higher education which included enhancing

relationships, improving learning motivation, offering personalized course

material, and developing collaborative abilities. Indeed, social media has

contributed greatly to facilitating learning in the 21st century. (Bernard John

Kolan, Patience Emefa Dzandza). By this social media also helps teenagers

express themselves through using it. “Most teens feel less depressed and

lonely when using social media because they are surrounded by good

people who motivates them to strive harder on their academics. And it helps

teens to enhance their study habits with the help of social media.” (Frank

Catalano). There are a lot of positive and negative outcomes on whether this

is applicable to all or not. The researchers believe that there are factors that

help, or it could easily distract a person from their focus in studying however

it will be up to their self-control and if they are using these sites to make their

education better It’ll help them gain more knowledge that will benefit them in

the future.

Conceptual Framework

Social Media
Facebook, YouTube
and TikTok

Figure 1.1

Social media such as Facebook, YouTube and TikTok is connecting with

people from all over the planet. The mind map shows how using social

media can have an effect to teenagers. There are different factors in which

the usage of SNS will affect teenagers. Social media could have a big

impact to the student’s academics life. Social media has many effects to

students which are their study habits, learning, school performance,

academic standing, and school interaction. It shows in the mind map if social

media really enhances or destruct the student’s academics life. One factor in

learning something from social media is you can teach other students what

you’ve learned from.

Statement of the Problem

Social Media such as Facebook, YouTube and TikTok has been part

of people’s lives. It isn’t surprising that It is the most common activity for

children, teens, and adults. The usage of social media has become an issue

to the society especially to teenagers. Using SNS’ can either enhance or

negatively affect one’s studies. It’s been a daily routine for people to use and

check their accounts occasionally. Most people think that using social media

may negatively affect the study habits of teenagers. This contradicts to

some studies that show that SNS have an advantage in sharing more

content that is necessary for their own understanding which helps them be

motivated to study more. The usage of social media will be depending on

how the teenager can balance their studies as well. Social media shares

different kinds of content and this can possibly trigger to a problem, with

using social media it has become a distraction for many and it destructs their

studies as well. The usage of social media and its problem to teenagers is

timely. Not all teenagers find social media useful for their studies. Balancing

students and social media usage for teenagers is hard since they could

easily be distracted. On the other hand, social media does offer unlimited

news within seconds. This could help teenagers with their studies and

learning new things. They get support from social media which taps them in

mind to do better on their studies. They could use it for their information for

their studies. It is up to them if they will use the given knowledge in a

positive or negative way.

COLLEGE OF COMPUTER STUDIES 1

1. The use of social media can enhance study habits by getting information

for teenagers to learn, they will get support from internet peers to study more.

Somehow this usage of SNS could destruct a teenager’s studies since social media is

one of the reasons why teenagers are usually distracted.

2. Teenagers can manage to study while using social media because they

follow a pattern to help them focus on studies. This pattern will help them focus

more and help them retain more knowledge.

3. It affects the study habits in different ways it could either be

positive or negative.

● Negative way that it affects; - Will not be motivated to study if

they are just using their phone always. - They will not be productive in any

way possible. - It will not help them focus on their studies and it could lead

to laziness to study.

● Positive way that it affects; - It helps them in having a proper

mindset. - It motivates them since they get support from their internet peers.

- They could also get more information that will help them in their studies

understudies and screen the understudies on the utilization of the long-

range interpersonal communication site. The examination will empower the

understudies of the senior level so they will know that, aside from the social

advantages of this long-range informal communication site, utilizing the

locales more than vital will present potential threats to their wellbeing. It will

be significant in helping understudies in understanding the variety of social

major social media we focusing to research is Facebook, YouTube and the

most use social media TikTok. To support the study, the researchers have

prepared a survey These researchers will use online survey using Google

Forms to easily combine the forms of the respondents. During the process

of our survey, the participants will be our guide to determine the ideas and

perspectives of different people with different pasts and different interests.

The participants hobbies will be used as a reference tool to accomplish the

survey effectively. The survey would not only make a big contribution to their

study but will also help the researchers understand the different point of

views of their respondents. We will conduct a survey using a Google Form,

we will survey 10 students of every Grade 12 students at Informatics

Northgate College. Particularly extrapolating and learning from other

people’s values, knowledge, and experience. Concerns of the participants

may be raised to have a better experience and understand what the concern

may be. It will be held inside the campus. The data gathered will be kept

only to the researchers with maximum security to fully get rid of false news

or data. Rest assured, all will fall in place and planning will be done

smoothly.
