Vibration sensors
Piezoelectric accelerometers, both IEPE and charge mode types, are designed
for use in applications where the actual acceleration range is unknown, or
where shock and vibration measurements are required.

IEPE-type piezoelectric accelerometers (Isotron®) feature integral electronics,

and tend to be smaller and more cost-effective. High impedance charge mode
sensors are known for having a high mean time before failure (MTBF) and are
used in conjunction with a charge amplifier or in-line charge converter.

Meggitt Sensing Systems offers the industry’s largest selection of standard

and custom piezoelectric accelerometer sizes and configurations, as well
as associated signal conditioning, cables and accessories to meet unique
requirements.

Vibration sensors
Within extreme measurement environments, such as those found in
nuclear power plants, cryogenic test chambers or gas turbine engines, use
of piezoelectric sensors can be especially challenging. Sensors must be
designed to withstand extremes of high and low temperatures and radiation,
with long mean time before failure (MTBF), while providing high reliability
and measurement accuracy within their intended usage environment.
Meggitt Sensing Systems offers more than 60 years of expertise in the
design and manufacture of rugged piezoelectric accelerometers for extreme
environments. Each sensor is offered in a variety of ranges, mounting
configurations and styles and subjected rigorous in-house quality testing prior
to shipment, ensuring their reliability and performance.

Vibration sensors
For high-reliability industrial vibration measurements within deep water or
other submersion environments, Meggitt Sensing Systems offers the Wilcoxon
Research range of hermetically sealed underwater accelerometers. These
rugged sensors are available in both stainless steel and titanium housings,
making them highly resistant to galvanic corrosion, particularly when mounted
onto cast iron or mild steel structures.

Wilcoxon Research underwater accelerometers are designed to withstand

continuous external pressures up to 650 psi (44.8 bar). Sensors are subjected
to rigorous testing of simulated actual use conditions, including weld
hermeticity verifications via helium leak testing and pressure cycling, to
eliminate potential for cracks which might only otherwise appear under certain
operating conditions. Special water-blocked integral cabling impedes water
transmission along conductors, should a cable jacket become pierced or
punctured while in use.

Acoustic sensors
Hydrophones are, quite simply, underwater microphones for acoustic
measurements. Meggitt Sensing Systems offers a full range of Wilcoxon
Research hydrophones, designed for use in both seawater and freshwater
environments. Each hydrophone incorporates piezoelectric crystals with
a built-in electronic amplifier to boost the low level signals produced by
underwater pressure waves. Output is a dynamic AC signal superimposed
upon the DC Bias Output Voltage (BOV). Typical applications include biological
studies, ship studies and underwater ordnance monitoring.

In addition, the Wilcoxon Research family of leak detection hydrophones are

used to “listen” for leakage sound indicators in situ, primarily in pipeline
monitoring applications. A leak detection hydrophone is a piezoelectric sensor
that is directly coupled to the fluid system to detect acoustic signals which
typically characterize a leakage condition.

Conditioners
As a complement to the precision LVDT and RVDT sensors highlighted in
this catalog, Meggitt Sensing System offers a complete range of Sensorex
conditioning instrumentation, including display signal conditioners, signal
conditioning cards, boards and racks. When used in conjunction with Sensorex
LVDTs and RVDTs, the conditioners convert a transducer’s mechanical position
into a corresponding electrical output, with a high degree of accuracy and
repeatability. The Sensorex conditioners are ideal for use in test laboratory
environments, as well as for general testing applications in the process
industries, where minimal maintenance and easy-fit configurations are needed
to reduce downtime and costs.

Calibration systems
Meggitt Sensing Systems recommends the periodic calibration of sensors
and instrumentation to ensure continued performance according to published
specifications. For sensors used in severe environments, more frequent
calibrations are recommended. Endevco® calibration systems provide an expedited
means of performing necessary verifications and are particularly ideal for use in
test laboratories where higher quantities of sensors are in use.

For customer convenience, Meggitt Sensing Systems offers multiple CAACS service

extension plans, for continued support within the laboratory environment after
initial product warranty expiration. With loaner equipment options and special
access to the CAACS technical support team, the plans offer a known cost of
ownership and a means of accurately budgeting support requirements, ensuring
that any technical issues with the system can receive immediate troubleshooting,
and be back up and running with minimal downtime.

Our premium service plan includes direct support to the CAACS team, loaner
equipment, software upgrades, hardware repair costs, annual transfer standard
calibration, and limited on-site support.

Inertial systems
The Meggitt Sensing Systems Sensorex range of inertial
systems are expressly designed for the precision
gravitational force measurement of position, attitude
and navigation, and typically also, triaxial acceleration
and rotation. With a full range of gyroscopes, servo
inclinometers and accelerometers, as well as inertial
measurement units (IMUs), the highly rugged Meggitt
inertial product range is ideal for navigational
measurements, antenna and satellite positioning, attitude
measurement, avionics platform stabilization applications
and high-reliability use within laboratory or other more
general dynamic testing environments.
Typical applications:

> Avionics
> Data acquisition systems
> Navigation and positioning equipment
> Platform and pipeline leveling
> Structural monitoring
> Transportation/rail monitoring

Tilt
The Sensorex range of high-precision tilt sensors from Meggitt Sensing
Systems is ideal for pipeline leveling, structural testing, rail monitoring, and
general angular measurements. They feature oil immersed sensing elements,
for high resistance to external shock and vibration inputs, with IP65 sealed
housings for added environmental protection.

Gravity-referenced servo inclinometers incorporate the earth’s gravitational

field (±1 g) as their primary measurement reference point. They are most
commonly used in civil engineering, industrial production (robotics &
automation), rail and general laboratory environments (test benches &
prototyping). High-performance MEMS inclinometers are typically used
within space constrained environments, and offer precision tilt measurement
capabilities within a compact and robust package size. They are used for pitch
and roll measurements; satellite and antennae dish monitoring, as well as
machinery monitoring and control applications.

Inertial systems
The Meggitt Sensing Systems Sensorex range of inertial measurement units
(IMUs) incorporates MEMS-based technology with no moving parts, ensuring
their high-reliability performance in severe environments. Sensorex IMUs
are used to measure the current rate of acceleration and gravitational forces
on three axes with high accuracy, as well as changes in pitch, roll and yaw.
Units are fully compensated for the efforts of non-linearity and temperature
drift, as well as for bias and misalignment errors. Rugged, lightweight and
compact, Sensorex IMUs are ideal for use in onboard flight testing, unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs), road and rail vehicle studies, flight control, as well
as a navigational back-up on aircraft and watercraft. In addition, Meggitt
Sensing Systems offers a range of Sensorex MEMS-packaged gyrometers,
designed to measure angular velocity to a high degree of accuracy. Sensor
outputs are digitalized and temperature compensated for greater accuracy and
performance.
