USE IMAGE MANIPULATION TECHNIQUES (lesson 2)

What I need to know

 Photo editing and design software allow you to manipulate or edit images.
 In order to perform image manipulation, you need to have basic knowledge of
image editing operations such as cutting, cropping, replacing, and more.
 For this, you need an image editing software for image manipulation practices.

The followings are some examples of image editing software:

1. Adobe Photoshop
2. Gimp
3. Corel Draw
4. Pixir Editor
5. PAINT.NET
6. InPixio

Online File Formats for Images and Text

 Image File Format refer to how data associated to the image will be stored.
It can be compressed to decrease file size of the image.
There are two different compression you can choose when enhancing your
images: loss and lossless compression.
 Loss compression reduces file size by removing redundant information means
that some data from the image file is lost.
 Lossless compression retains values and manages to lower file size
JPEG/JPG

 The JPG was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group to store large
image files. It can compress images from 0% (heavy compression) to 100% (no
compression) by pixelating sections of the image.
 However, even if one selects the highest quality setting (100%), it still is lossy in
nature because it’s reducing color information.

PNG

 The PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

It has two variants:
1. PNG-8
2. PNG-24
 The PNG-8 supports 8-bit color, and has a range of 256 colors
 The PNG-24 supports 25-bit color RGB and has access to millions of colors.
 PNG is generally used for images that require transparency or need to preserve
the image quality (non-lossy).
 Technically speaking, PNG can support browser animation, but only on Firefox,
whereas GIF animations are supported by all browsers.
 PNG files are much larger than JPEG.
GIF (Lossless)

 The GIF format is a type of bitmap, but unlike JPEG or PNG, GIF files are limited
to a maximum palette of 256 colors.
 Essentially each GIF image contains a preset ‘box of crayons’ and there is no
way to truly mix those colors to make new colors.

TIFF

 Is a lossless raster format hailed for its extremely high image quality. Often the
format used by professionals in creative industries, these files require a large
amount of storage space and are a challenge to share unless zipped or sent
using file-sharing tools.

RESOLUTIONS AND PIXELS

 Image Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image or the details an

image holds.
 It is identified by the height and width of the image.
 A pixel is just one unit of the whole digital image. It is the smallest unit of an
image.
 The higher the resolution means that there are more pixels per inch (PPI),
resulting in more pixel information and creating a high-quality, crisp image.

WHAT IS GIMP?

 Gimp is a cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows

and more operating systems.
 It is free software; you can change its source code and distribute your changes.
 GIMP means “GNU Image Manipulation Program”.
 It is free software to download at http://www.gimp.org/. GIMP was built for a linux
system, but it can also run on any platforms like windows and Mac OS.
