15. A great physicist of this century (P.A.M. Dirac) loved playing with numerical values of Fundamental constants of nature.
This led him to an interesting observation. Dirac found that from the basic constants of atomic physics (c, e, mass of
electron, mass of proton) and the gravitational constant G, he could arrive at a number with the dimension of time.
Further, it was a very large number, its magnitude being close to the present estimate on the age of the universe (15
billion years). From the table of fundamental constants in the book, try to see if you too can construct this number (or
any other interesting number you can think of). If its coincidence with the age of the universe were significant, what
would this imply for the constancy of fundamental constants?
16. If velocity of light C, Planck’s constant h and gravitational constant G are taken as fundamental quantities then express
mass in terms of dimensions of these quantities.

Main concept used: Homogeneity of dimensions in R.H.S and L.H.S. of equation separately in each terms.

6. (c) [ML-1T-2]

Explanation: [ML-1T-2]
7. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Explanation: Impulse = Δp = change in momentum, hence it has the dimensions of momentum.

Δp
By Newton's second law F =   so Δp = FΔt

Δt

∵  impulse = Δp ⇒ impulse = FΔt

∴  impulse ∝  Force ×  time

8. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

13. It is given that viscous force F depends on (i) the radius r of steel ball, (ii) the Speed ν of the tiny steel ball, and (iii) the
coefficient of viscosity η of viscous liquid.

Wriring dimensional formula for given quantities, we have

F = [MLT-1], r = [L], ν =[LT-1] and

η = [M1L-1T-1],

According to given condition we can write

[M1L1T-2] = [L]a[M0L1T-1]b[ML-1T-1]c

                = [McLa-b-cT-b-c]

Comparing powers of M, L and T on either side of equation, we get

c = 1

a + b - c = 1

- b - c = -2

On solving, these above equations, we get

a = 1, b = 1 and c = 1

Hence, the relation becomes

f = krην

Here, k is constant of proportionality.

mechanics, quantum field theory and quantum electrodynamics and is particularly known for his attempts to unify the

Let Mass m α [h]a[c]b[G]c

[M1L0T0] = k [ML2T-1]a [LT-1]b[M-1L3T-2]c

[M1L0T0] = k [Ma-c L2a+b+3cT-a-b-2c]

On comparing the powers of M, L, T on both side we get

a-c = 1 ⇒a = c+1 .........(i)

2a+b+3c = 0  ........(ii)

-a -b -2c = 0  ........(iii)

a = c+1      [from equation (i)]

By putting the value of a in equation (ii) & (iii), we get

2(c+1)+b+3c = 0

2c+2+b+3c = 0
b+5c = -2 .........(iv)

and -(c+1)-b-2c=0

-b-3c = 1 ..........(v)

From equations (iv) & (v), we obtain on adding

c = −

So, a = c+ 1 = −   1

Put the value of c in equation (iv), we get
