LIFE OF JESUS
The Ministry of John the Baptist (Matthew 3:1-12; Mark 1:1-8; Luke 3:1-20)
Lesson 1. Briefly describe John the Baptist as to his dress, diet, and lifestyle.
-John is described as wearing clothes of camel's hair, and living on locusts and wild
honey. John proclaims baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin, and says another
will come after him who will not baptize with water, but with the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3. What baptism did John preach? In what region of Palestine was he
baptizing?
3:17 - 4:11
-John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all
the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were
baptized by him in the Jordan River.
Mark
1:1-13
4. How did the Jews react to John’s preaching and baptizing? Give evidence to
support your answer.
-30 “This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is greater than I
am, because he existed before me.’ 31 I did not recognize him, but I came baptizing
Luke with water so that he could be revealed to Israel.” 32 Then John testified, “I saw the
3:1-22
Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. 33 And I did
not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The
4:1-13
one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining—this is the one who
baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have both seen and testified that this man is the
Chosen One of God” (John 1:30-34).
John
1:19-34
5. What did John say to the Scribes and Pharisees who came to be baptized by
him? Why?
-But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was
baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the
coming wrath?

6. What was John referring to when he said, “And even now the ax is laid to the root
of the trees?”
-When John speaks of the ax being laid at the root of the tree, he is saying that the judgment
is imminent. The ruling class of Israel was often compared to a tree (cf. Isa 11:1), and so John
is saying that the rulers of Israel (such as the religious leaders) will be cut down unless they
repent.
8. What did John say the Christ would do when He came? How and when
would that be done?
-John 1:11, NIV: He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive
him.
The Baptism of Jesus by John (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22)
9. What did John the Baptist say to Jesus when he saw Him coming to be
baptized of him? What was Jesus’ answer to him?
-Jesus came to John the Baptist while he was baptising people in the River
Jordan. John tried to make him change his mind, but Jesus answered, “In this
way we will do all that God requires.” So John agreed. As soon as Jesus was
baptised, he came up out of the water.

Jesus’ Temptation in the Wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12,13; Luke 4:1-13)
11. By whom and for what purpose was Jesus led into the wilderness?
-Matthew said Christ Jesus was baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit at the Jordan River. Then, the apostle
said, the Savior was led by the Holy Spirit “into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.” Jesus fasted forty
days and nights in the wilderness.
12. How long did Jesus fast? Briefly state what you believe His physical, mental, and emotional
conditions might have been.
-When Jesus had completed the fast of forty days and had communed with God, he was, in this
hungry and physically weakened state, left to be tempted of the devil. That, too, was to be part of
his preparation.
13. What did Satan say to Jesus in an effort to get Him to turn stones into bread? How did Jesus
answer this temptation?
-The temptation was in the invitation to turn stones into bread miraculously, instantaneously,
without waiting or postponing physical gratification. His reply to the tempter was crystal clear: “It
is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth
of God.” (Matt. 4:4.)
14. What was Satan’s second appeal to Jesus? How did Jesus answer it?
-In the first temptation, Satan sought to prompt our Lord to act independently of the Father, and contrary to
the leading of the Holy Spirit, saving His life by commanding stones to become bread. Satan seems to have
believed the saying, “Where there’s life, there’s hope
15. What was Satan’s third appeal to Jesus? How did Jesus answer it?
-According to three of the gospels, after Jesus had been baptised he went into the desert to fast for forty days
and forty nights. During this time, Satan appeared to Jesus and three times tried to tempt him.
16. Since both Satan and Jesus used Scripture, describe the basic differences in how they used it.
-It is interesting to note that the concept of the “morning star” is not the only concept that is applied to both
Jesus and Satan. In Revelation 5:5, Jesus is referred to as the Lion of the tribe of Judah. In 1 Peter 5:8, Satan is
compared to a lion, seeking someone to devour. The point is this, both Jesus and Satan, to a certain extent,
have similarities to lions. Jesus is similar to a lion in that He is the King, He is royal and majestic. Satan is
similar to a lion in that he seeks to devour other creatures. That is where the similarities between Jesus, Satan,
and lions end, however. Jesus and Satan are like lions in very different ways.

CHRISTIAN MORAL VALUES 1
LIFE OF JESUS
17. What was John’s initial reply to the priests and Levites who asked him who he was? When pressed
for a more definite answer, what did he say?
-6There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify about
the Light, so that through him everyone might believe. 8He himself was not the Light, but he came to
testify about the Light.
9The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and
though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. 11He came to His own, and
His own did not receive Him. 12But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He
gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man,
but born of God
18. When asked why he baptized, since he was not the Christ, Elijah, or one of the prophets, what was
John’s answer?
-But John the Baptist says he is not the long-awaited Messiah. He is not Elijah, who many believed would
come back to life in order to tell others about the Promised One. Nor is he the prophet which Moses
promised (Deuteronomy 18:18). The Baptist hasn't made any claims to authority—in fact, he's made it
plain that his mission is to make a path for someone else. Since the investigators were out of ideas, they
resorted to essentially asking John the Baptist, "Who do you think you are?" In John 1:26, the Baptist
ignores questions about himself, and focuses again on the Messiah.
19. When John saw Jesus approaching, what did he say to the multitudes who were listening to him?
-When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy
bread for these people to eat?" He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to
do. Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!"
20. How did John know Jesus was/is the Son of God?
-John pointed us to Jesus, the Son of God, as the Lamb who came to meet our deepest need by becoming the
sacrifice for all our sin. Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Lamb of God, the Son of God, the Savior of the world. Take
away my doubts, I pray, and strengthen me to serve you always. Amen.

Jesus gave it to him?
-(Matthew 16:18, 19)—the confession, naming, and receiving of authority—Jesus
gave to Simon the title of Cephas, or Peter.
Texts
Fourfold Gospel 2. Who did Philip tell Nathanael they had found? What question did
Nathanael then ask? What reply did he receive?
pp. 109-138
-Philip told Nathanael that he had found “the one Moses wrote about
in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of
Nazareth, the son of Joseph” (John 1:45).
Matthew
3. What did Jesus say in reference to Nathanael? What does that mean?
-Jesus immediately characterizes him as "an Israelite in whom is no deceit". Some
scholars hold that Jesus' quote "Before Philip called you, when you were under the
fig tree, I saw you", is based on a Jewish figure of speech, referring to studying the
Torah
Mark
4. Who did Nathanael say Jesus was?
-Nathanael recognizes Jesus as "the Son of God" and "the King of Israel". He
reappears (as "Nathanael of Cana") at the end of John's Gospel, as one of the
disciples to whom Jesus appeared at the Sea of Galilee after the Resurrection
Luke 5. What “greater things” did Jesus say Nathanael would see?
-You will soon see greater things than that.” And then came the promise of
something very, very big. “Nathanael,” Jesus said, “the time is coming when you
will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of
Man.” It was the same language the Bible used to describe Jacob's dream!
John

7. What was the miracle? Who encouraged Him to do it? Why? What does
that say about the faith that person had in Jesus?
-The miracles of Jesus are proposed miraculous deeds attributed to Jesus in
Christian and Islamic texts. The majority are faith healings, exorcisms,
resurrections, and control over nature.
10. What did Jesus do when He found the above conditions at the temple?
What did He say?And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all
them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the
money changers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them,
It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made
it a den of thieves.

LIFE OF JESUS
11. Why did the Jews ask Jesus for a “sign?” What sign did Jesus give them? What did it mean? When did
His disciples remember this sign?
cross, the principal symbol of the Christian religion, recalling the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the redeeming benefits of
his Passion and death. The cross is thus a sign both of Christ himself and of the faith of Christians.Jesus knew that His
mission on earth would soon be over, and He wanted to teach His Apostles how to remember Him when He was no
longer with them. Jesus blessed some bread, broke it into pieces, and gave it to His Apostles. He told them to eat it to
remind them of His body, which He would soon sacrifice for them.
13. What did Jesus, at first, say to Nicodemus? How did Nicodemus respond? What did Jesus then tell him?
-Jesus replied, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of
God.”
4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb and be
born a second time, can he?”
5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed
that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it wishes, and you hear the sound
of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the
Spirit.”
10 Jesus answered, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you don’t understand these things? 11 I tell you the
solemn truth, we speak about what we know and testify about what we have seen, but you people do not accept
our testimony. 12 If I have told you people about earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I
tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from
heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted
up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

LIFE OF JESUS
15. What did Jesus mean when He said that He had to be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness?
-8:14–15; italics added.) It is evident that Moses used the lifting up of the serpent as a symbol to represent
healing through Christ. He bore testimony of Christ's atonement and used the Brazen Serpent as a teaching
cerning salvation and the forgiveness of sins through the atonement of the Savior.
17. How was Jesus the “light” who came into the world? Why is this such a fitting description of Him? Why
did some reject that light? What are the consequences of rejecting it? What happens when one comes to
the light?
Jesus again claims to be Light of the World in John 9:5, during the miracle of healing the blind at birth, saying:
When I am in the world, I am the Light of the World. This episode leads into John 9:39 where Jesus
metaphorically explains that he came to this world, so that the blind may see.
19. What testimony did John give about Jesus on this occasion?
-He testified that Jesus Christ is “the only begotten of the Father” (John 1:14), and that Jesus gives power to all who
receive Him “to become the sons [and daughters] of God” (John 1:12).
20. What awaits those who “believe in the Son?” What does it mean to believe on Jesus?
-Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains
on them.
