ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

1. (a) A dc shunt motor takes an armature current of 20 A from a 220V supply.Armature circuit re-
sistance is 0.5 Ω.For reducing the speed by 50 %,calculate the resistance required in the series,
with the armature if
(i) Load torque is constant.
(ii) Load torque is proportional to the square of the speed. [6]
(b) Suggest a suitable test to find the efficiency of a DC machine without loading it and explain the
same. [6]
(c) The Hopkinson test on two similar shunt machines gave the following full load data:
Line voltage=110 V; Line current=48 A; Motor armature current =230 A; Field currents are
3 A and 3.5 A and Armature resistance of each is 0.035 Ω.Calculate the efficiency of each
machine assuming brush contact drop of 1 V per brush. [6]
(d) A 4 pole dc motor runs at 600 r.p.m.on full load taking 25 A at 450 V.The armature is lap wound
with 500 conductors and flux per pole is expressed by the relation.

φ = (1.7 ∗ 10−2 ∗ I 0.5 )

where I is the motor current. If supply voltage and torque are both halved,Calculate the speed at
which the motor will run.Ignore stray losses. [6]
(e) The input to 230 V dc shunt motor is 11 KW.Calculate (a) the torque developed (b) the efficiency
(c) the speed at this load. The no load current is 5A; No load speed is 1150 r.p.m; Armature
resistance is 0.5 Ω and shunt field resistance is 110 Ω. [6]

2. (a) The open circuit characteristics of a separately excited d.c. shunt generator driven at 1000 r.p.m
is as follows: It has a field resistance of 100 Ω.

Table 1:
Field current (A) 0.3 0.5 0.7 0.9 1.1 1.3 1.5 1.7
E.M.F (Volts) 35 60 75 100 110 120 125 130
(i) Draw the Open circuit characteristics
(ii) Find the Open circuit voltage and exciting current
(iii) Find the critical resistance and
(iv) Find the resistance to induce 120 V on open circuit. [8]
(b) Explain the conditions necessary to build up voltage in a shunt generator. [4]
(c) A 110V shunt generator has a full load current of 100 A, shunt field resistance of 55 Ω and
constant losses of 500W.If full load efficiency is 88 % find the armature resistance. Assuming
voltage to be constant at 110 V, calculate the efficiency at half full load and also the load current.
[6]
(d) Explain armature reaction with a neat diagram. [6]
(e) When driven at 1000 rpm with a flux per pole of 0.04wb, a dc generator has an emf of 210 V. If
the speed is increased to 1200 rpm and at the same time the flux per pole is reduced to 0.02wb
per pole what is the induced emf?. [6]

(c) What precautions should be observed during the operation of on-load tap changers? [3]
(d) Why the transformer winding should be preferably tapped in the middle in transformer tap
changers? [3]

4. (a) What is open delta connection in three phase transformers? Give its significance. [6]
(b) Explain the Scott connection of transformers and its application. [8]

5. (a) A 1-phase 10 kVA, 500/250 V, 50 Hz transformer has primary winding reactance as 0.2 Ω and
secondary winding reactance as 0.5 Ω .The primary winding resistance is 0.4 Ω and secondary
resistance is 0.1 Ω.Resistance of equivalent exciting circuit referred to primary is 1500 Ω and
reactance of equivalent exciting circuit referred to primary is 750Ω. What would be the reading
of the instruments when the transformer is connected for the open circuit and short circuit tests?
