Quadrat method
Number of individuals of a species is counted within a fixed
area (E.g. 1m2) at random points throughout the study
area. This data is then used to estimate the population
density and distribution of different species within the study
area. (A random sampling method).
Used when the sample area is more uniform E.g. a
savannah
E.g. throughout the savannah you would find trees and
grasses
Different species will be found at different points of the study area.

Line transect
A line is extended through the length of the study area and
the number of species at specific intervals (E.g. 5 m
intervals) is counted (the organisms under the line and
within arms length of the line are counted). (A more
systematic sampling method).
Used to sample linear habitats. E.g. a shoreline.
E.g. where the waves come up on the sand you would find
chip chip and small fish and little arthropods but further
away from the water you will find small plants and then
bushes and coconut trees.
