The marine biomass pyramid is inverted because:

1) The producers in this ecosystem are microscopic organisms

2) These phytoplankton also have very short lifespans

so at any given time their collective biomass is small compared to the other trophic levels. The primary consumers are
zooplankton which are a little larger than the phytoplankton and therefore have greater biomass. The secondary consumer
of the marine ecosystems, fishes and even whales, are far larger than the lower levels of the food chain and therefore
have an even greater collective biomass.
For your knowledge

Still, the secondary consumers, organisms like larger fish, whales, and other organisms, are much larger than the primary
consumers and producers. These organisms tend to live for longer periods of time as well, so at any given moment, their
biomass is quite significant.

Note that in the marine pyramid of NUMBERS the pyramid is not inverted since the phytoplankton are microscopic and
their numbers are actually higher (similar to the land producer, grass).
