SELF - REFLECTION
How do you give your feedback? Is it corrective feedback? What are you going to
do to improve to give feedback to your students? Write one or two sheets.

Feedback is information that is given to the learner about his or her

performance of a learning task, usually with the objective of improving
this performance.
(Ur 1996:242)
Since the history of learning I think the role of feedback has been crucial to give
information to learners that tells them whether or not they are doing the right thing.
There is a drawback, about using corrective feedback and it is that some students
can be demotivated and they can feel pushed, which causes negative attitudes
towards the language and towards the teacher.

Error correction has always been a very controversial topic, and perhaps a thorny
issue as there is very little agreement as to how to correct somebody who has made
an error and whether this correction will be effective or not; in order for corrective
feedback to be very effective teachers need to more consistent and systematic when
correcting faulty utterances because it has been found that teachers sometimes
accept ill-formed utterances and some other times they do not.

As teachers, we have to provide feedback to students to reinforce expectations and

to correct student errors during lessons. Feedback is in my opinion a powerful tool
for improving student performance. About the time to provide feedback I think is
based according to the learning context, so teachers should provide feedback as
soon as they see the opportunity to do it.

Throughout my teacher’s carrier I have experienced feedback in both ways: positive

and negative. I have had the opportunity to reflect and analyze situations where
students stopped participating and when I identified the reason I was self-
disappointed, I apologize to my student and since that day I am always aware that
my students are humans and that is essential teachers make the process of
providing feedback a positive, neutral learning experience for the student.

As teachers, it is essential that we make the process of providing feedback a positive,

or at least a neutral, learning experience for the student. Also, we have to take time
to explain what was wrong and our ultimate goal of feedback is to provide students
with an “I can do this” attitude.

responsibility to nurture a student’s learning and to provide feedback in such a

manner that the student does not leave the classroom feeling defeated.
giving students an explanation of what they are doing correctly AND incorrectly.
However, the focus of the feedback should be based essentially on what the
students is doing right.

Finally, I want to share with you one of the best advices a colleague gave to me: ask
students to give you feedback. that they can do it anonymously. What did they like
about your class? What didn’t they like? If they were teaching the class, what would
they do differently? What did they learn the most from you as a teacher? By doing
so, we can learn from ourselves, be open to change and wise enough to accept your
mistakes.
