Introduction

Founded in 2022 the International Franz and Carl Doppler Flute Competition is committed to
providing young promising flutists from around the world the opportunity to launch their
professional career on the international stage while enhancing international cultural exchanges and
friendships through music.

The International Franz and Carl Doppler Flute Competition 2024 will be held in honor of the Doppler
brothers in Cagayan de Oro City in the Philippines. The host is the Liceo de Cagayan University
represented by its Conservatory of Music, Theater and Dance. The Doppler Competition is primarily a
chamber music competition that promotes both the music of the Doppler brothers and the creativity
and inventiveness of flute music in general.

Friends and interpreters of flute music from the 19th century as well as todays flute students can’t
get past the Doppler brothers. Franz Doppler, together with his younger brother Carl, was one of the
greatest flute virtuosos and composers for flute of the 19th century. Between 1852 and 1862, the
Doppler brothers performed as a duo in all European music centers and enjoyed great success with
pieces they composed together. They held several positions at the Theaters in Budapest, Vienna and
Stuttgart. About 150 years later, a descendant of the Doppler brothers also set out to conquer the
world as a flute virtuoso: it is Ulrich Müller Doppler, the Artistic Director of our International Franz
and Carl Doppler Flute Competition 2024. Together with other international experts, Ulrich Müller
Doppler initiated this international competition for flute performers named after his famous
ancestors.

Competition rules

The Competition consists of four rounds: the First, Second, Third, and Final Rounds. Fifty to one
hundred contestants who passed the First Round based on the submitted recording and document
will be invited to participate in the Competition on site. The order in which contestants perform will
be determined by drawing lots for each round. All performances will be open to the public.

Categories

The competition is held in two categories:

Category I for one flute and piano and

Category II for two flutes and piano.

1
First round (video round)

•The complete repertoire of the first round has to be recorded on or after October 1, 2022 in one
single video without editing and uploaded on or before August 1, 2023 via the upload form on
www.doppler-flute.com. The order of the recorded pieces in this round may be freely chosen.

• The video should be recorded from a fixed and wide camera angle with both applicant's face and
hands clearly visible in the frame at all times.

• The video may be excluded from the Preliminary Screening if it was perceived that the hand
movement of the applicant does not match with the sound during his/her performance.

• Any video camera function that adjusts audio input level automatically shall not be used as it often
reduces dynamic range of the recording resulting in an inaccurate representation of the
performance. It is highly recommended to take into consideration the quality of sound; make sure
that the volume level of the video is neither too loud nor too quiet, and that background noise
should be kept to a minimum.

• The following data formats are acceptable: MP4, WMV, or MOV. Applicant's full name should be
indicated in the file name.

• A certification form attesting the authenticity and completeness of the video, signed by the third
person, must be submitted. It must provide the place and date of the recording. The form could be
downloaded from the Competition's website.

•The Jury will then evaluate the recordings and announce those invited for the second and further
rounds on site in Cagayan de Oro City not later than November 1, 2023.

•The jury for the first round consists of the 7 jurors mentioned on the homepage, or parts of them.
The jury reserves the right to listen to only parts of the recording. During the recording, the
previously mentioned guidelines for the video recordings must be observed.
