Preparatory activity
1 Lift vehicle with lifting platform.

Vehicle must be horizontal.

Otherwise the differential (1) will not be filled
correctly and an incorrect oil filling capacity can
lead to fluid loss and damage.
The automatic selector lever must be in
position "N". The parking brake must not be
applied.
Clean
2 Clean area surrounding drain screw (3) and
filling screw (2).
Remove
3 Unscrew filling screw (2) and remove seal.
4 Unscrew drain screw (3) and remove seal.
Drain off
5 Drain oil from differential(1).
6 Turn both rear wheels five revolutions
simultaneously in direction of travel. The front wheels must remain stationary.
Otherwise not all of the oil will be drained from
the differential (1).
The automatic selector lever must be in
position "N". The parking brake must not be
applied.

7 Clean drain screw (3) and threaded hole in Loctite 7063 (400 ml) cleaning spray *BR00.45-Z-1046-04A
differential (1).
Install
8 Screw drain screw (3) with new seal into
differential (1). Replace seal of drain screw (3).
Otherwise fluid loss and damage may occur.

Pay attention to the correct tightening torque.

Damage can otherwise occur.
Filling screw/drain screw to differential *BA35.31-P-1003-02J
Pour in
9 Pour oil into differential (1) up to lower edge of Filling capacity *BF35.31-P-1001-01A
filler hole.
Hand pump *210589007100
Clean
10 Clean filling screw (2) as well as filler hole in Loctite 7063 (400 ml) cleaning spray *BR00.45-Z-1046-04A
differential (1).
Install
11 Screw filling screw (2) with new seal into
differential (1). Replace seal of filling screw (2).
Otherwise fluid loss and damage may occur.

Pay attention to the correct tightening torque.

12 Lower vehicle with vehicle lift.
Reset service data and perform function test
13 Connect diagnostic system.
14 Reset rear axle oil service data.
15 Use diagnostic system to perform function test
of component "All-wheel drive solenoid valve
(Y68/3)" when driving.
Damage can otherwise occur.

Resetting of the service data is called up in
the diagnostic system as follows:
Select "all-wheel drive transfer case" control
unit (N45)
Select menu item "Adaptations"
Select menu item "Teach-in processes"
Select menu item "Control unit"
Select menu item "Reset oil service data".
A curve must be driven.
Otherwise the brief jolt may not be felt and the
function test of component "All-wheel drive
solenoid valve (Y68/3)" cannot be correctly
performed.

When performing actuation, a brief jolt must be

felt in the vehicle; this ensures that the entire
differential (1) is correctly filled with oil.
Damage can otherwise occur.

If after even 10 actuations a brief jolt is not

perceptible.
Perform operation steps 16 to 22, and then start
again at operation step 13.
16 Disconnect diagnostic system.
Remove
17 Lift vehicle with lifting platform.

18 Unscrew filling screw (2) and remove seal.
Check
19 Check whether oil in differential (1) is at lower Filling capacity *BF35.31-P-1001-01A

If oil is not at lower edge of filling hole,

 Pour oil into differential (1) up to lower edge of
filler hole.
Clean
20 Clean filling screw (2) as well as filler hole in Loctite 7063 (400 ml) cleaning spray *BR00.45-Z-1046-04A
differential (1).
Install
21 Screw in filling screw (2) with new seal.
Replace seal of filling screw (2).
Otherwise fluid loss and damage may occur.

Pay attention to the correct tightening torque.

Damage can otherwise occur.
