Lesson Idea Name: Moon Phases

Grade Level/Content Area: 4th grade, Science
Content Standard Addressed:
S4E2b. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phases of
the moon (new, crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full).

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

I can develop a model and describe repeating patterns of moon phases.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Analyzing- to promote high levels of critical thinking, students will illustrate the differences between
moon phases.
How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

The students will be directed to the classroom Padlet to complete activities. Learning activities and
content are linked on Padlet with a space themed background which is related to the standard. Prior
knowledge will be assessed with a response on Google Forms. The video in BrainPOP shows a great
representation of the topic by using a flashlight to represent moon phases. This is a task students
can try safely. There are two collaborative and communication activities where students will work
with a partner to complete. Kahoot will be used as the assessment tool in the lesson. Students will

be asked to use a nickname so they can’t be identified by others. This provides students will
confidentiality when answering. The lesson will be concluded with a closing response activity in Pear
Deck, where students will write about what they learned.
Managing student learning:
JamBoard will encourage a shift from passive to active social learners because it promotes
collaboration and communication with the class. Students can explain their thought process by
providing evidence of thinking to class discussions and group projects.

I will take intentional volunteers to share what they have learned from the topic and/or share
connections developed from the learning experience.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The learning activities completed in the lesson support the Engagement principle in the Universal
Design for Learning (UDL) framework. Collaborative assignment allows students to work digitally
with peers as it is a concept they enjoy. There are multiple activities to motivate students in an
interactive, engaging manner. The closed captioning feature in BrainPOP supports representation as
it provides another form of viewing the content.
Reflective Practice:
With the advancement in the world wide web and technology, Web 2.0 tools help students build a
better understanding of how to use the tools. These tools have more options to explore as they
share and collaborate. Web 2.0 tools are easy to use for all, which keeps students motivated and
productive. I look forward to using assessment tools. The students are learning, interacting, and
having fun. It allows me to assess and properly meet their learning needs.
